UNESCO-IOC and U-INSPIRE Indonesia have announced an open call for 2021 Indian Ocean Youth to Participate in Short Video Competition on Tsunami Awareness to engage with youth living in the regions around the Indian Ocean to share their creative thoughts, ideas, concepts, and/or activities related to tsunami awareness.
To commemorate the International Youth Day (12 August), the International Disaster Risk Reduction Day (13 October), and the World Tsunami Awareness Day (5 November), the Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Center (IOTIC) and the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG / IOTWMS) of UNESCO / IOC will organize a series of activities related to a short video competition for Indian Ocean Youth.
The Indian Ocean Youth Short-video competition will be in line with UNESCO / IOC and UNDRR 2021 campaign on World Tsunami Awareness Day. The activity will align with Activity Strand 2: Social Media Campaign and Activity Strand 3: Event- The competition will culminate with a special event organized by the ICG / IOTWMS and IOTIC to commemorate the World Tsunami Awareness Day on 5 November 2021 where the winner of the competition will be announced, and the videos will be showcased.
This initiative aims to engage with youth (between 14 and 24 years) living in the regions around the Indian Ocean to share their creative thoughts, ideas, concepts, and / or activities related to tsunami awareness.
Objectives
- Increase the knowledge of Indian Ocean youth on the topic of Tsunami Awareness and Preparedness
- Increase the participation of Indian Ocean Youth in tsunami awareness and preparedness in the region
- Encourage and upskill Indian Ocean youth in the creation of content for social media and other communication outlets, in particular on the topic of Tsunami Awareness and Preparedness
- Contribute to the commemoration of the World Tsunami Awareness Day
Benefits
- UNESCO / IOC Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Center (IOTIC) will invite all registered participants to two short tutorial / webinars organized by ICG / IOTWMS, IOTIC and U-INSPIRE Indonesia on:
- Tsunami awareness and community preparedness, and
- Short video making tutorials. These two short tutorials / webinars will be held on mid-September 2021.
- UNESCO / IOC IOTIC will provide certificates of participation signed by UNESCO IOC, ICG / IOTWMS, and IOTIC to all participants who submitted their video in this competition.
- UNESCO / IOC IOTIC will announce the winners and showcase the videos during a special event organized by the ICG / IOTWMS and IOTIC to celebrate World Tsunami Awareness Day on 5 November 2021.
- The jury will select the best three videos for each group:
- The First Winner will receive
- A certificate of winner signed by UNESCO IOC, ICG / IOTWMS, and IOTIC
- Tsunami Ready Board-game and Gifts for each individual
- Money prize of approximately USD 1,000 (one thousand US Dollars)
- UNESCO will showcase the winning videos in UNESCO / IOC, IOC Tsunami Program, and IOTIC website and social media
- The Second Winner will receive
- A certified cate of winner signed by UNESCO IOC, ICG / IOTWMS, and IOTIC
- Tsunami Ready Board-game and Gifts for each individual
- Money prize of approximately USD 600 (six hundred US Dollars)
- UNESCO will showcase the winning videos in UNESCO / IOC, IOC Tsunami Program, and IOTIC website and social media
- The Third Winner will receive
- A certificate of winner signed by UNESCO IOC, ICG / IOTWMS, and IOTIC
- Tsunami Ready Board-game and Gifts for each individual
- Money prize of approximately USD 400 (four hundred US Dollars)
- UNESCO will showcase the winning videos in UNESCO / IOC, IOC Tsunami Program, and IOTIC web site and social media
- The First Winner will receive
Competition Groupings
The competition will be divided into four groups:
- Group 1 – Eastern Indian Ocean region: Open for youth from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
- Group 2 – Indian Ocean Small Island States: Open for youth from Comoros, Maldives, Mauritius, Singapore, Seychelles, Timor-Leste and France La-reunion.
- Group 3 – North Western Indian Ocean: Open for youth from India, Pakistan, Iran, Oman, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
- Group 4 – Western Indian Ocean region: Open for youth from Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, and Madagascar.
Eligibility Criteria
- Age between 14 and 24 years old with interest in disaster risk reduction, especially on Tsunami Awareness.
- A resident of a country bordering the Indian Ocean under the mandate of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG / IOTWMS).
- Individual participants and groups of up to three participants can enter the competition.
- To promote gender equality, groups should have at least one female member and female participation is encouraged.
- Each participant (individual or group) can submit one entry only. Submission of more than one video will be disqualified.
Requirements
- The video should showcase young persons’ ideas, projects, activities or campaigns towards promoting community tsunami awareness.
- The video can be in the local language or English. The local language videos should have English subtitles.
- The video can have graphs, animations, music, and written text. If the text is in the local language, there should also be English subtitles.
- The materials used in the video must be under a free or open license. If not, the participants shall own the license to use materials in the submitted video.
- The maximum duration of the video is 2 minutes.
- The maximum size of the video is: 720p. 1280 x 720 with Frames per Second: at least 30 FPS
- Name your video with this format: Group # _Topic-code_Name-of-participant_Title-of-Video (example: Group 4_PTE_Victoria-Nyamango_Are-we-tsunami-prone).
