The U.S. Embassy Kathmandu has announced an open competition for organizations interested in submitting proposals to organize a comprehensive Indo-Pacific Regional Model United Nations (MUN) conference. The conference will provide university level students from the Indo-Pacific region with skills and knowledge to become leaders in the region’s economic, political, and civic development.
The U.S. Embassy Kathmandu has convened Regional Model UN conferences each year for the past four years with the goal of cultivating leadership skills, team building skills, conflict resolutions and diplomacy skills, and creating ties among emerging leaders from across the Indo-Pacific Region. The FY2020 conference should emphasize experiential learning and capacity development to equip participants with the tools for success in their professional and personal life. The conference will be held in a hotel in Kathmandu.
Goals
Goals of the conference should include:
- Developing life skills.
- Ensuring emerging regional leaders view the United States and Nepal as partners in regional and global challenges.
- Developing a Model UN culture among youth and students through a series of workshops and targeted MUN conferences leading up to the main conference day.
The conference should be organized around several major themes relevant to the region. Proposals should include a plan to contact alumni of prior conferences to solicit input in determining those themes. Potential options could include but are not limited to; economic growth, regional integration, good governance, and cybersecurity.
Interested organizations should submit a proposal that fully describes how each of the following activities will be administered;
- Design and implement a 5-day residential MUN conference for 200 university level students between May to August 2020. Applicants are encouraged to include opening and closing events, welcome reception, key speakers and a broad, inclusive cross section of the host-country community in their proposal.
- Conduct a series of MUN workshops in various areas in Nepal and in the region.
- Conduct provincial MUNs in all seven provinces of Nepal and virtual sessions regionally, as appropriate
- The program should include substantive interaction with U.S. Government representatives as well as non-government organizations, businesses and think tanks that focus on regional priorities.
- The program should also include experiential learning days, enabling delegates to immerse themselves in relevant areas of the host-country’s community, as pertains to the thematic areas.
- The program will not include the travel expenditure of international delegates in the budget.

- Total available funding: $60,000
- Length of performance period: October 2019 to September 2020 (12 months)
Participants and Audiences
The intended audience for this conference will be university level students between the ages of 18-25 from across the Indo-Pacific Region. The U.S. Embassies across the region will be expected to help with the participant selection.

- Not-for-profit organizations, including think tanks and civil society/non-governmental organizations
- Public educational institutions
- International Organizations and Governmental institutions
