The World Environment Day is celebrated each year on 5th June for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our environment. As each year the World Environment Day is organized around a specific theme, the theme for 2018 is “Beat Plastic Pollution“.
According to UN; Beat Plastic Pollution is a call to action for all of us to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges of our time. The theme invites us all to consider how we can make changes in our everyday lives to reduce the heavy burden of plastic pollution on our natural places, our wildlife – and our own health. While plastic has many valuable uses, we have become over-reliant on single-use or disposable plastic – with severe environmental consequences.
The World Environment Day, that was first celebrated in 1974 has helped United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to raise awareness and generate political momentum around growing concerns such as the depletion of the ozone layer, toxic chemicals, desertification and global warming. The Day has developed into a global platform for taking action on urgent environmental issues. Millions of people have taken part over the years, helping drive change in our consumption habits, as well as in national and international environmental policy.
Every World Environment Day has a different global host country, where the official celebrations take place. This year it is India that is hosting the World Environment Day and has chosen the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution.
