The World Food Programme (WFP) has launched an initiative in the Guéra Region of Chad to strengthen efforts in preventing and treating malnutrition among vulnerable populations.
This program focuses on enhancing community involvement in addressing acute malnutrition among children aged 6 to 23 months, as well as among pregnant and breastfeeding women. It aims to ensure that affected individuals are identified and receive appropriate care through local nutrition units, while severe cases are referred to specialized treatment programs.
Through this initiative, children between 6 and 59 months will receive nutritional rations to support recovery from malnutrition. The program also seeks to improve access to healthcare and adequate nutrition for mothers and children, particularly during pregnancy. Efforts will be made to diversify household income sources and enhance knowledge on nutrition, hygiene, and health through the establishment and support of Mothers’ Clubs. These clubs, also known as “Mamans Lumières,” will play a crucial role in promoting agricultural production for nutritional use and educating communities on preventing malnutrition at the local level.
The program introduces cash distribution as a preventive measure for malnutrition, targeting children under two and pregnant and breastfeeding women. It also includes regular education sessions on essential family practices and nutrition across community nutrition centers (FARNE). To ensure sustainability, WFP will strengthen coordination mechanisms and community-based nutrition monitoring systems.
A key focus of this initiative is building the capacity of implementing actors to adhere to national protocols, ensure quality follow-up and reporting, and apply strategic operational guidance effectively. Furthermore, the program will promote multi-actor coordination to enhance collaboration at various levels. Ultimately, the initiative aims to empower communities in Guéra to better prevent and manage malnutrition, improve maternal and child health, and foster long-term resilience against nutrition-related challenges.
