Deadline: 12-Sep-2025
The Henderson-Massey Local Board is offering grants to support community-driven projects that reflect local aspirations, diversity, and sustainability.
These grants aim to empower people to take the lead in making positive change in their neighbourhoods while supporting creativity, economic opportunity, and environmental responsibility.
To be considered, each application must align with at least one key focus area. These range from strengthening local leadership and community identity to increasing visibility of Māori culture, supporting ethnic communities, and promoting kaitiakitanga. Other areas of focus include zero-waste initiatives, low-carbon lifestyles, youth development, and fostering thriving town centres that are inclusive, creative, and safe.
Projects that build stronger, more connected communities will be looked upon favourably. Higher priority will be given to activities that are inclusive and improve outcomes for Māori and Pasifika communities. Events that model healthy living—such as smoke-free environments, waste reduction, and nutritious food—also stand out. Additionally, educational or training programmes that upskill young people, especially in alternative transport or local economic development, are encouraged.
While a wide range of community-led initiatives are welcome, some applications may be given lower priority. This includes those that request funding for travel and accommodation outside Auckland, projects that have already taken place, or events that primarily serve fundraising purposes.
Grants typically range from $2,000 to $5,000, offering vital support to not-for-profit, charitable, or voluntary organisations that serve the wider community. These organisations are often made up of individuals who come together with a shared purpose of creating benefit for others. Groups that are open and accessible to all, regardless of background or interest, and that demonstrate inclusive values are strongly supported.
Organisations applying for funding are generally expected to have a formal legal structure and governance documents that define their charitable mission. This enables a clear agreement with Auckland Council and ensures funds are used responsibly. The Council recognises that many community groups have limited revenue streams and seeks to prioritise funding where it will have the most meaningful impact.
However, certain types of expenses are not eligible for support. These include debt repayment, legal or medical expenses, religious or political promotion, and any public services that are the responsibility of the central government. Grants for physical works requiring permits or consents will only be paid once the necessary approvals are in place. Alcohol purchases are also excluded from funding.
Finally, groups that have already received two successful Henderson-Massey Local Board grants within the current financial year are not eligible to apply again during that period. This ensures fair access to funding and encourages broad participation across the community.
This grant programme offers more than just financial help—it reflects a shared vision for a thriving, inclusive, and sustainable Henderson-Massey. It supports those who are ready to make a difference and who believe in the power of local communities to lead their own change.
