Deadline: 17-Oct-2025
Applicants are now invited to submit applications for Community Foundation Ireland’s Biodiversity Fund.
Groups across the Republic of Ireland are invited to apply for grants of up to €12,000 to help implement the recommendations outlined in their plans. This initiative is designed to support community-led efforts to restore and protect local biodiversity through practical, impactful actions.
To be eligible, organisations must already have a completed CBAP. Those without one cannot apply under this funding strand but may be able to access support through a separate stream designed for developing new CBAPs. The funding is intended to bring plans to life by supporting specific biodiversity actions at the community level.
There are some important financial considerations. The maximum grant available is €12,000, but it cannot exceed 50% of an organisation’s annual income. For example, if a group has an annual income of €20,000, they can apply for up to €10,000. All organisations, regardless of income, may apply for funding up to €6,000. For those with CBAPs set to expire in 2025, up to €4,000 of the grant can be allocated to hiring an ecologist to renew the plan, though this must be included within the overall funding limit.
This is a competitive grant round and certain types of projects may be prioritised. Applications that show strong engagement with the local Biodiversity Officer, those that actively involve the wider community, and those that work closely with local landowners and farmers will be viewed favourably. Projects with clear goals and measurable biodiversity impact in their plan areas are also more likely to succeed. Geographic spread will also be considered to ensure that support reaches a wide range of communities.
Organisations must be not-for-profit and have proper governance structures in place, including updated financial records and a dedicated bank account. Projects must be focused on delivering actions set out in the existing CBAP and must involve relevant stakeholders such as landowners and local authorities. The funding cannot be used for projects that have already happened or will begin before grants are awarded, nor can it be used for ongoing operational costs like insurance or rent.
This funding presents a significant opportunity for community organisations to take meaningful steps toward enhancing local biodiversity. By turning their action plans into reality, groups can make a tangible difference to the environment while fostering stronger community connections through shared ecological goals. Interested organisations are encouraged to review the criteria carefully and prepare a detailed and realistic application that outlines their proposed actions, timelines, and costs.
