  • In 2019 FRIDA program will offer a prize for a consolidated initiative with demonstrated impact on Community Networks.
  • Community networks offer a way for remote communities, currently unattended, to organize themselves to develop local solutions that allow them to access the Internet. Community networks, in the context of this call, refers to Internet access networks, built and operated by citizens who wish to connect their commune, city or town.
  • FRIDA will award a prize to a project or organization that has contributed to the development of community networks in Latin America and the Caribbean through work in one or more of the following areas:
    • Innovations in business models for the development and consolidation of community networks
    • Technical solutions, including the development of devices and improvements for network management.
    • Development of local content to promote an Internet use that responds to relevant and significant needs for new users
    • Promotion of regulation that enables and enhances the development of community networks.
  • They may apply for organizations working to develop affordable, locally managed community networks that are deploying low-cost creative solutions to bring connectivity to regions without Internet service.

The awarded initiatives will have 3 main characteristics:

  • Technological component: In all cases, projects must have a technological component with which they have sought to respond to a social problem.
  • Innovation: The solutions used must be innovative, that is, present new strategies, concepts, ideas, methods and processes that respond to social needs and strengthen the communities that seek to serve.
  • Proven impact: Initiatives with proven impact will be rewarded. That is, indicators and evidence must be presented that prove the generation of value for the communities that seek to serve.
