Applications are now open for the Toyota Mobility Unlimited Challenge which supports radical improvements in the mobility and independence of people with lower-limb paralysis through smarter assistive technology.
The challenge is looking for innovative teams from around the world to build the next generation of mobility devices for people with lower-limb paralysis. More importantly, it is looking for teams who put end-users at the heart of everything they do. That means engaging people with lower-limb paralysis from the outset to develop devices that best meet their needs.
It aims to harness creative thinking from across the world to accelerate innovation and encourage collaboration with end-users, resulting in devices that will integrate seamlessly into users’ lives and environments, enabling greater independence and increased participation in daily life.
From the teams who submit a finalist development grant entry, ten will be invited to pitch their concepts to the judges. From the ten teams who pitch, five be will awarded a Finalist Development Grant.
Participants need to convince the judges that your concept, if brought to market, could radically improve mobility and independence for those with lower-limb paralysis. You need to show the judges that you are a credible team with the capacity and expertise to develop a full prototype by 2020.
Funding Information
- Finalists will be competing for a $500,000 Finalist Development Grant.
Prize Information
- Finalists will be competing for a $1,000,000 Prize. Only one team will receive the entire pot.
- Five finalist teams will pitch to the judges in 2020.
- An assessment process ahead of the pitch will inform the judges’ decision.
- Finalists will need a physical prototype to present to the judges.
- Finalists will need to convince the judges that their prototype, if brought to market, could radically improve the mobility and independence of people with lower-limb paralysis. And they’ll need to demonstrate a credible business plan to bring the device to market.
- The $1 million Prize will be used to turn the physical prototype into a marketable device.
- The winner will be announced to the world in September 2020.
- The winner won’t be required to give up any Intellectual Property to receive the Prize.
Eligibility Criteria
- The initiative is looking for teams with engineering, software, design and data science expertise from around the world.
