CFAs: Residential Fellowships for Emerging Forces in Global Political Economy

Deadline: 15-Oct-2025

The Institute for Advanced Study is inviting applications for its Residential Fellowship Program for the academic year 2026–2027.

Each year, approximately 20 scholars are invited to the Institute for residential fellowships. About half of those invited are working in the year’s designated theme, half on other projects. The School welcomes applications from junior and senior scholars across a wide range of fields in the social sciences and related disciplines. Members (as Institute fellows are known) have access to campus resources and facilities, including offices, libraries, subsidized dining services, and housing.

Theme for 2026–2027: Emerging Forces in Political Economy. Maximum stipend is $80,000. Factors affecting stipend calculation include base salary, availability of leave pay and other institutional support, and/or other grants/awards.

Members are expected to be present on campus from mid-September through mid-May, excluding the winter break between terms. They are required to participate in a weekly, all-School seminar and present their research to the group, and if selected for the Theme group, participate in the bi-monthly Theme Seminar. Members may receive their pay directly from the Institute or through their home institution. Taxes are withheld, and no indirect costs or fringe benefits are included. Stipend awards do not allow for institutional overhead.

All fellows receive a modest research fund with reimbursement of up to $800 for non-travel research expenses. Relocation allowances and supplemental assistance for child care for families with preschool-age children may also be available. Additional support may be provided to help cover the cost of health insurance if not offered by a fellow’s home institution.

Applicants must hold the Ph.D. or equivalent scholarly credentials at the time of application, with the degree awarded no later than October 15 of the year prior to that of the fellowship. The fellowship is residential and runs for the full academic year from September to May.

The selection process emphasizes the quality of the project and the applicant’s demonstrated ability to undertake and complete it. Consideration is also given to the project’s fit with the School and, when relevant, the annual theme. The evaluation relies on a careful study of the project proposal, writing sample, and track record, without reference letters to ensure fairness across applicants.

The application requires an online form, a research proposal of up to four pages, a curriculum vitae, and a writing sample of up to 50 pages. Reference letters are not required and will not be accepted. The deadline for submission is October 15, 2025, and the term of the fellowship will be from September 2026 to May 2027.
