The Government of Japan offers Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Thailand to support social and economic development initiatives.
One of the key programs under this scheme is the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), which focuses on promoting socio-economic development at the grassroots level and enhancing human security. The program provides direct support to ongoing projects run by non-profit organizations, including NGOs and medical or educational institutions, helping them achieve their goals more efficiently and effectively.
Grants under the GGP typically provide up to 20 million yen (approximately 5 million THB) per project, with exceptions for projects that strongly address human security, which may receive up to 100 million yen. All funded projects are expected to be completed within one year of signing the grant contract.
The scheme prioritizes projects that address Basic Human Needs (BHN), particularly those that have a direct, positive impact at the community level and require timely support. Typical projects include improvements to basic educational facilities, provision of essential medical equipment for hospitals, and corporate social responsibility or Base of the Pyramid initiatives in collaboration with Japanese companies.
Projects ineligible for funding include those that do not directly benefit grassroots communities, such as research in higher education institutions or administrative expansions of applicant organizations. Commercial activities, projects unrelated to socio-economic development such as arts, culture, or sports, and political, missionary, or military activities are also excluded. Additionally, projects in Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani, and the southern part of Songkhla provinces are not eligible due to security concerns, and no additional grants are provided for projects that have already received funding.
