The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at Michigan State University for master’s students is open to students who have already completed a bachelor’s degree at an African university and are residents or citizens of an African country. This program targets academically qualified yet economically disadvantaged young people in Africa who will contribute to the transformation of the continent.
Through leadership and career training, financial, academic, social, and post-graduation support, The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at MSU ensures that Scholars are equipped with the academic and professional skills and competencies needed to make significant contributions to economic growth and social development in their respective countries of origin.
MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program differs from other scholarship initiatives in several key ways:
- Community-minded students with the potential to create change. Scholars are academically strong students who come from economically disadvantaged communities and demonstrate strong leadership and a commitment to improving their communities.
- Holistic support. The scholarship is comprehensive, covering school fees/tuition, uniforms, textbooks, computers and other learning materials. The Program provides financial support for transportation, living expenses and stipends, and also have access to mentors and counsellors.
- A focus on leadership skills and socioeconomic change. Scholars receive leadership training and develop skills and experience they need to initiate change in their home communities.
- A practical employment orientation. Scholars are provided with career guidance, internship opportunities and training in skills critical to employment success.
Eligibility Criteria
- The program is open to residents and citizens of Sub-Saharan African countries. Students who are already enrolled in degree programs in Africa or elsewhere are not eligible for the program. Students who are accepted to the program demonstrate the following qualities:
- Prior completion of a bachelor’s degree from an African University with academic achievements suggesting continued academic success as a graduate student.
- Strong commitment to a professional path in line with an area of study that can positively impact Africa.
- Demonstrated interest and capacity for serving others through engagement in volunteer activities in school, college, or community.
- Leadership potential.
- Ability to cope with change, and interest in other countries and cultures.
- Significant financial need and/or from lowest income bracket in country of origin.
- Commitment to return to serve home country or region in ways that enhance economic growth and social development.
