The Walkley Foundation is inviting nominations for the WIN News Scholarship for aspiring journalists who are looking for an opportunity to follow their dreams of a career in the media.
This scholarship will be open to an outstanding student in their final year at university, or a recent graduate aged 26 years or younger.
Scholarship Details

The successful applicant will complete a minimum of six weeks at the Wollongong office, with an option to complete the remaining six weeks at one of the following WIN regional news centres:
- Sunshine Coast
- Hobart
- Albury
- The recipient will have hands-on experience by accompanying journalists and camera operators out in the field. Under the guidance of the News Director and Chief of Staff, the recipient will have the opportunity to go source, write and voice reports, which will be broadcast in the 6 pm WIN News bulletins. The recipient will also have an opportunity to learn from news presenters in the studio.
- The recipient will receive a $10,000 stipend for the 12-week duration of the scholarship.
Terms and Conditions
- The applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia
- Applicants must be aged 26 years and under at the time of application
- Applicants must be enrolled in journalism or communications studies at an Australian university.
- Recent journalism or communication graduates who do not receive the majority of their income from journalism may also apply as long as they are 26 years or under.
- Proof of enrolment/graduation is required.
- Undergraduate or postgraduate students will be eligible.
- The successful applicant must be able to participate in the scholarship for the entire 12-week period.
- The chosen applicant must fulfil the entire 12 weeks of the scholarship.
- The scholarship will be undertaken at WIN News in Wollongong.
- The scholarship recipient will receive a stipend of $10,000 to cover living expenses for the duration of the scholarship.
- Successful applicants not from Wollongong will need to fund their own travel and accommodation costs.
- The successful applicant will participate in tasks assigned to them by WIN News. During the scholarship, the successful applicant will be bound by the same obligations as regular staff members
- The successful applicant is expected to keep confidential any information obtained during the course of the scholarship.
- On completion of the scholarship, the successful applicant must provide a report (written or filmed) outlining their experience and how it developed their understanding of journalism and in particular long-form journalism. This report will be provided to the scholarship committee and may be published in segments or in its entirety for the purposes of promoting the scholarship.
- Shortlisted applicants must be available to be interviewed via video call by the judging panel in the week commencing May 30, 2022.
- The applicant must be available to undertake the 12-week scholarship at a date agreed on by WIN News and the Walkley Foundation.
Selection Criteria
Selection criteria includes the following:
- A demonstrated passion for journalism across broadcast and digital.
- An excellent academic record.
- Written and spoken proficiency in English.
- Excellent presentation, research and writing skills.
- Excellent presentation, research and writing skills.
- Knowledge of and familiarity with Microsoft Office, G Suite and digital publishing programs.
- The ability to be part of a collaborative busy environment
- Work experience or contribution to wider community projects will be viewed favourably.
