The Walkley Foundation is seeking applications for the Walkley Young Indigenous Scholarship.
This is an exciting opportunity for an aspiring Indigenous journalist aged 30 years or under to develop their newsroom experience with two leading news providers. This twelve-week scholarship will be broken down into six weeks with Junkee Media and six weeks with 10 News First in Sydney. You’ll develop a broad understanding of newsroom and production processes and requirements, and as a member of the team, you will be encouraged to share your ideas, skills and knowledge.
Prize Details
- The recipient will receive a stipend of $10,000 to cover living expenses for the duration of the scholarship.
- This twelve-week placement will be broken down into selected placements with dedicated duties and responsibilities
- Six weeks placement at Junkee Media in Sydney, one of Australia’s fastest-growing and most innovative new media companies. Junkee produces fast-paced digital news for a youth audience with a special focus on politics, social justice and culture.
- Junkee: 4 x weeks: general reporting + produce a feature of their own choosing
- Punkee: 1 week: Learn to produce video content
- Video: 1 week: assist video team
Terms and Conditions
- The applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia.
- The applicant must be aged 30 years or under at the time of application.
- The applicant must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.
- Undergraduate or postgraduate students will be eligible however you do not need to be a university student.
- Recent journalism or communication graduates who do not receive the majority of their income from journalism may also apply as long as they are 30 years or under.
- The successful applicant must be able to participate in the scholarship for the entire 12-week period from August 2022 in Sydney
- The chosen applicant must fulfil the entire 12 weeks of the scholarship.
- The scholarship will be undertaken at 10 News First and Junkee Media in Sydney.
- The scholarship recipient will receive a stipend of $10,000 to cover living expenses for the duration of the scholarship.
- Successful applicants not from Sydney will receive some additional funding to cover their travel and accommodation costs.
- The successful applicant will participate in tasks assigned to them by Junkee Media and 10 News First. During the scholarship, the successful applicant will be bound by the same obligations as regular staff members.
- The successful applicant is expected to keep confidential any information obtained during the course of the scholarship. On completion of the scholarship, the successful applicant must provide a report (written or filmed) outlining their experience and how it developed their understanding of journalism. This report will be provided to the scholarship committee and may be published in segments or in its entirety for the purposes of promoting the scholarship.

- A demonstrated passion for journalism across broadcast and digital
- Excellent presentation, research and writing skills
- The ability to spot a newsworthy yarn
- Experience in interviewing people in researching for stories
- Experience in pitching stories and ideas on presentation of stories
- The ability to be part of a collaborative, busy environment
- Written and spoken proficiency in English
- The ability to work to deadline
- A positive, willing and adaptable approach to the role at all times
