Africa Media Network on Health: AMNH Excellence in Health Journalism Awards

Africa Media Network on Health (AMNH) is accepting applications for its AMNH Excellence in Health Journalism Awards ceremony to honour journalists who have demonstrated outstanding merit in health reporting.

The award ceremony and gala dinner would convene representatives from government, media and civil society to honor five selected journalists from countries where AMNH is currently active – Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia.

The event will provide an opportunity to underscore the critical importance of quality health journalism through the remarks of a prominent event host as well as award speeches. The AMNH will also launch its new Model Curricula for Journalism Education – a certificate in health reporting.

• To motivate journalists and media houses to prioritise reportage on health-related issues

Eligibility Criteria

• Applicants in All Countries can apply.
• All entries must have been broadcast or published between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018.
• Material must be supplied as follows:
  • Stories should be pdf format or, if digital, a direct website link to the story
  • Videos should be mp4, or mov format.
• Entries and information contained within any entry must have been obtained legally and must not infringe any copyright or other intellectual property rights, must not be defamatory or breach any privacy law, and must not breach any other law or regulation. Eligibility for all award categories will be at the sole discretion of AMNH.
• Entrants must be members of Africa Media Network on Health.
• All entries must be in English or Swahili.

Selection Criteria

Judges will be looking for stories/topics focusing a wide range of health systems strengthening; universal health coverage; health financing; health governance; human resources for health, including community health workers (CHWs); health policy and implementation issues; sexual and reproductive health and rights, health systems research and access to medicines.

Relevance of the coverage

• The focus must be on stories or topics in, about or related to a developing country
• Include the voices and views of people in/from developing countries
• Quality of the coverage
  • Well-crafted, structured and engaging
  • High production and editorial values
  • Distils and presents complex topics to the target audience in an understandable way
• Originality and creativity
  • Explores new angles on familiar topics
  • Substance and accuracy of the coverage
  • Well-researched, accurate, analysis and balanced reporting
• Impact and reach of the coverage
  • Demonstrates the actual impact or potential to catalyse change.
  • May have prompted additional media coverage or policy change – change of law or increased budgetary allocation towards health.
