Zero Project Call for Nominations 2022

The Zero Project 2022 Call for Nominations seeks to identify Innovative Practices and Policies from around the world–centered around enabling accessibility¬–which helps them, implement Article 9 of the UN CRPD and realize a world with zero barriers.

Themes

They are looking for nominations from Civil Society, the Public Sector, companies and businesses, and the Information and Communication Technology sector.

• Built environment
  • Planning and construction of all sorts. Basic elements include entrances, orientation systems, information system (technology), restrooms, bathrooms, etc.
  • Building and designing accessible public spaces: government buildings, halls, monuments, shopping and entertainment facilities, hospitals, general practitioners, pharmacies, conference venues, parks, playgrounds, public restrooms etc.
  • Building and designing equipment, orientation and information systems, devices, apps and software that can be used to make the built environment more accessible.
  • Example: A building is not considered accessible just because it has an accessible ramp in the back, but instead it should be incorporated with the main entryway.
• Infrastructure/transportation
  • Public transport systems (busses, trains, trams, shared taxis, taxis, underground systems), pathways, sidewalks,
  • Public utilities like energy, water, sanitation (e.g., accessible usability, service providing, information and billing policies)
  • Building and designing equipment, orientation and information systems, devices, apps and software that contribute to the accessibility of public infrastructure.
• ICT – Information and Communication Technology
  • All forms of telecommunication: speech, text messaging, social media, internet and data:
    • Devices developed like smartphones, notebooks, tablets, wearables, assistive technologies, computer steering technologies, gaming solutions.
    • Automated, half-automated or affordable teach to speech, speech to text, speech to sign language, text to easy-to-read language etc.
    • Cloud based solutions, digital skills, orientation systems, community and knowledge platforms, digital libraries etc.
• Products and Services
  • All products and services that improve the mobility of persons with disabilities, improves their ability to get access to all products and services, including purchasing and delivery, product information, billing processes etc.
• Smart Cities and Urban Development
  • Urban planning making cities and public spaces more accessible, where urban planners work jointly with other stakeholders to create new accessible urban environments or improve the existing built environment, infrastructure and public services.
• Tourism
  • This includes the entire travel-chain from leaving home to reaching the desired destination and back, or elements of it, like accessible hotels or information systems.
• Arts and Museums
  • This includes all activities to make theatres, concert venues, museums and all forms of art (the visual arts but also music, literature, theatre productions etc.) more accessible to all.
• Emergency and disaster recovery
  • Creating evacuation and other inclusive emergency systems that are accessible for all. Evacuation and Disaster relief include emergencies after earthquakes, electricity blackouts, major accidents and explosions, floods, hurricanes/cyclones, and all man-made situations like war, civil war, refugee situations etc.
• Access to financial services
  • They are looking for solutions which enable persons with disabilities to fully participate in financial services, physical and virtual. In cooperation with one the major European Banking Groups there is a special incentive, awarding successful technologies which can show proven results.
• Workplace adaptation
  • This includes all measures that make workplaces more accessible.
• Universal Design (UD) – Principles
  • UD is a universally recognized principle for planning and design that – if credibly and evidently used – will support the nomination: Universal design (close relation to inclusive design) refers to broad-spectrum ideas meant to produce buildings, products and environments that are inherently accessible to older people, people without disabilities, and people with disabilities.

Eligibility Criteria

• Everyone can submit a nomination, including self-nominations. They encourage nominations from across the business, civil, technology, academic, and public sector. If you are not nominating your own organization, they will also need the details of a contact person at the nominated organization.
