The Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis has launched its Innovative Student Research Grant Program to provide funding for students in psychology or behavior analysis doctoral programs and students in psychology or behavior analysis master’s programs that can support applied or basic research in the experimental analysis of behavior.
The Innovative Student Research Grant supports graduate students conducting promising research in behavior analysis. It offers up to three doctoral dissertation grants of US$5,000 each, two master’s thesis grants of US$2,000 each, and one grant of up to US$1,000. Funding amounts vary based on detailed budget statements, with preference given to projects involving translational research.
This program is funded through donations to the SABA endowment and aims to encourage innovative, methodologically rigorous studies that address important behavioral research questions. Recipients are recognized at the SABA Awards Ceremony during the ABAI Annual Convention and featured in Inside Behavior Analysis.
Eligible applicants must be enrolled or accepted in doctoral or master’s programs in psychology, education, behavioral science, or allied disciplines with behaviorally oriented faculty. They must have at least one academic year remaining to complete the project after applying.
Applicants also need to show commitment to basic or applied behavior analysis research and cannot apply for both this and the Bijou Grant in the same year. The ABAI Science Board manages the review process, while the SABA Board of Directors selects recipients.
Applications must include a biosketch, a proposal (five pages for doctoral, three for master’s, with two extra pages for references), and required sections such as Title, Significance, Specific Aims, Method, Limitations, Timeline, Budget and Matching Funding. Applicants must also submit letters of support from their advisor and department chair confirming eligibility and available resources.
Grant recipients must later submit a brief report and expenditure outline to the SABA Board by April 1 of the following year detailing how the funds were used.
