Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) Small Grants Funding Program – UK

The Voluntary and Community Sector Alliance (VCSA) has launched the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) Small Grants Funding Program that focuses on identifying and utilising the existing strengths, skills, and resources within a community, rather than concentrating on its deficits or needs.

It emphasises the potential of individuals, local associations, and institutions to drive positive change. By tapping into these assets, communities are empowered to take charge of their own development, fostering a sense of ownership, resilience, and sustainable growth. ABCD encourages collaboration and local leadership, creating a foundation for long-term success from within the community.

Which Community Partnerships are taking part?

• Horton and City Health Collaboration (Community Partnership 6)
  • Wards and Localities:
    • HCHC covers the following localities: City, Little Horton, Manningham, Toller & Heaton, all funded work must benefit residents of these areas.
  • Addressing Priorities
    • Horton and City Health Collaboration (CP6) are particularly keen to see applications which meet the following health creation priorities:
      • Health Priority 1. Improving health of Children/Young people
      • Health Priority 2. Prevention (including management) of chronic disease
      • Health Priority 3. Enhancing good mental health
• Wharfedale and Silsden Community Partnership
  • Wards and Localities: The Wharfedale and Silsden Community Partnership covers 3 wards of Wharfedale, Craven and Ilkley comprising the following localities: Silsden, Ilkley, Steeton, Burley, Addingham, Addingham, Menston, Eastburn, Whitley Head, Small Banks, all funded work must benefit residents of these areas.
  • Addressing Priorities 
    • The Wharfedale and Silsden Community Partnership are seeking to support organisations that provide products or services that support people to be healthier. They are looking to support a broad range of projects/organisations to increase their impact on the health of the local population.
    • They are particularly keen to see applications that seek to prioritise outcomes for children 5 – 13 years of age.
    • However, the community partnership is also happy to consider a broad range of funding
    • applications, here are some examples:
      • Debt Cafes
      • IT Training
      • Singing groups
      • Talking therapy
      • One-off events or a series of one-off events
      • Match funding
      • Pilot projects
      • Staff costs
      • Core costs
      • Capital items such as Laptops etc

Funding Information

• Horton & City Health Collaboration (CP6):
  • £500 – £2500
• Wharfedale and Silsden CP:
  • £ 100 – £4000

Duration

• Projects should be completed within 12 months from the date of the award.

Eligibility Criteria

• Organisations can apply to more than one Community Partnership (CP).
• Organisations can apply to the same CP more than once. If you have two project proposals or more, you may submit applications for them all separately to the same CP.
• Each Community Partnership determines its own health priorities, your application must show how it meets these priorities.
• Work must be delivered in the CP that has awarded your grant.
• Community Partnerships will consider funding Pilot Projects.

  • Grassroots group constituted
  • CIO & CIC
  • Registered Charity
  • An unregistered voluntary and community organisation with a not-for-profit constitution
  • Unincorporated Charitable Association
  • Other Voluntary Sector organisations
  • Not-for-profit such as Social Enterprise
  • Individuals
  • Potentially schools, Parish Councils

Ineligibility Criteria

• What can’t be funded
  • Activities that should be funded as a part of statutory provision.
  • Events and or activities that have already taken place.
  • Activities that exclude people on the basis of any protected characteristics.
  • Political parties
  • Statutory bodies for the most part will not be funded, though some Community Partnerships may accept applications from bodies such as schools.
