This may include establishing creative and safe ways to build alliances around shared values and/or issues related to gender equality women’s rights and their safety and security.
- Supporting human rights monitoring mechanisms: The objective of this area of work is to support CSOs in mapping and analyzing evidence on women’s rights and supporting human rights monitoring mechanisms, particularly focussing on gathering evidence on protection of women human rights. Against a fraught environment for rights, since August 15, with the dismantling of the Afghanistan Human Rights Mechanism (AIHRC) a major shift in Afghanistan has been the absence of an independent impartial fully functioning human rights monitoring mechanism. To address this gap, an independent, civil society led mechanisms/networks that seeks to identify the gaps in accountability mechanism and capacities for full respect of women human rights will be essential.
- Protecting women human rights defenders (WHRDs): UN Women Afghanistan focuses on reaching the most at risk population, in particular women human rights defenders (WHRDs), women civil society activist, women journalists, women civil servants from the previous government and women movement leaders – these women urgently need support that gives them access to information and services that will safeguard their psychosocial health, safety and security, access to resources and opportunities that will mitigate risks of being exploited, and enhance self-reliance and participation in decision making. The objective of this area of work is to support CSOs to run initiatives aimed at protecting WHRDs in Afghanistan.
