Deadline: 22-Nov-22
The Water Research Foundation (WRF) has announced the proposals for Improved Risk Management from Condition Assessment Data.
This project is funded by The Water Research Foundation (WRF) as part of WRF’s Research Priority Program.
Project Objectives
- This project will advance the understanding of deterioration mechanisms of common pipe types by mining existing condition assessment data and exploring relationships between known measurement points and deterioration between these measurement points. This project will provide a practical guideline, along with supporting algorithms, models, and/or decision frameworks, for utilities to improve risk management of such common pipe types with existing condition assessment data.
Research Approach
- This RFP is intentionally flexible in the research approach to encourage creativity and originality from proposers. Proposers should describe how they will conduct the research to meet the objectives listed above. The following approach is intended as a starting point:
- Perform a detailed review and analysis of existing condition assessment data for at least two types of common pipe in North America.
- Investigate ways to extrapolate pipe condition between measurement points, as well as further develop and understand the statistics of pipe deterioration and failure.
- Focus on large databases of pipe condition assessment data combined with additional analysis of pipe removed from the ground to develop an improved understanding of risk of failure.
- Consider additional data that supplement condition assessment data and provide value and understanding that should be included such as soil corrosivity, soil porosity, pH, shrink-swell potential, etc.
- Close collaboration with a utility actively engaged in buried infrastructure management would be highly desirable for a positive project outcome.
Funding Information
- Applicants may request up to $150,000 in WRF funds for this project.
- The anticipated period of performance for this project is 24 months from the contract start date.
Expected Deliverables
A detailed research report, as well as supporting algorithms, models, and/or decision frameworks to improve risk management of pipes.
Eligibility Criteria
- Proposals will be accepted from domestic or international entities, including educational institutions, research organizations, governmental agencies, and consultants or other for-profit entities.
