Deadline: 22 May 2020
The Digital Defenders Partnership (DDP) is currently soliciting applications for Sustainable Protection Funding.
Sustainable Protection Funding (SPF) aims to help human rights organisations (including journalists, grass-roots social movements, etc) build their digital security capacities over a longer period. This can include through improvements to infrastructure, hardware, or software; awareness-raising and training of staff; moving data to more secure servers, and much more.
The Digital Defenders Partnership was initiated in late 2012 by the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC) to protect critical Internet users – human rights defenders (HRDs), including activists, bloggers, civil society organisations, journalists, and other users of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to defend human rights, and keep the Internet free and open.
Funding Information
- The funding provided can be up to €50,000.
- The funding covers activities for a maximum of one year.
Sustainable Protection Funding can be used to cover a number of costs, which contribute to strengthening an organisation or collective’s capacity to respond to digital threats. These can include, for example:
- new computers, servers, or hosting for data or websites;
- migration to more secure platforms;
- technical support in implementing new systems;
- training or accompaniment processes on digital security or other aspects of security and protection;
- measures to improve physical security (which relate to information management and digital security)
- measures to address the psychological and psychosocial impacts of digital threats.
In order to be considered, the measures proposed should be based on a solid analysis of the risk situation and correspond to it. It is also important that the measures taken will contribute to the long-term resilience of the organisation, and their sustainability should be taken into account.
Please note that Sustainable Protection Funding is not appropriate for emergency situations.
Applicants who pass this initial assessment will then be invited to submit more elaborate full applications in June 2020.
