Elrha is seeking applications for its programme entitled “Research for Health in Humanitarian Crises (R2HC)” with an aim to improve health outcomes by strengthening the evidence base for public health interventions in humanitarian crises.
The scope of this programme covers any research that will strengthen the evidence base around public health interventions, and thereby lead to more effective public health interventions in humanitarian crises.
“Humanitarian crises” for the purpose of the programme includes natural disasters, conflicts, or complex emergencies, either at the regional, national or sub-national levels, within lower or middle income countries.
The Thematic scope of the programme is Prioritisation of public health humanitarian interventions and maximising value for money.
Funding Streams
- Core Funding: Research concerned with outcomes in the acute phase of an existing humanitarian crisis prioritised. Proposals focusing on resilience/disaster risk reduction or early recovery will be considered where a clear link is made with health outcomes in an acute phase.
- Rapid Response Funding Research: Research in the context of a rapid-onset crisis which is yet to occur. A mechanism has been established to be able to fund research in the acute phase of a rapid-onset crisis, for which the timeline of ‘standard’ funding programmes would be too slow.
Funding Information
Up to £3m of research funding is available in this programme.

- Research that is replicable in multiple contexts
- Multi-sector integrated responses
- Research that advances new methodological approaches in challenging context
- Research outcomes that are clearly linked to improving humanitarian responses.
Eligibility Criteria
- Lead applicant (can be from any part of the world):
- Eligible: Research institution, non-profit, UN, public, govt.
- Ineligible: Individual, profit seeking enterprise.
- In collaboration with research team members to include:
- Principle Investigator: Must have experience of relevant research.
- Research team must include both academic and operational partners. These may be from local, national, or international institutions/organisations.
