Leeds Community Foundation is pleased to be able to offer grants up to a maximum total amount of £20,000 to support Healthy Holidays projects across Leeds during the Easter, Summer, and Christmas school holiday periods in 2023.
The undertaking this grant giving at risk, and that risk is shared with applicants. This fund is reliant on Department for Education continuing to fund the Healthy Activity and Food Programme. they expect this to be the case, but this is not certain and believe it is better to give groups more time to prepare proposals, and submit your bids. If there are changes in the criteria, or requirements these will be reflected in funding agreements.
Projects will tackle Holiday Hunger and Inactivity, providing Healthy Holiday activities which support the social, emotional, physical wellbeing of children and their families.
Funding Information
- Informal (unincorporated) groups can apply up to a maximum of £5,000 as long their annual income in their last set of accounts does not exceed £10,000, or if receipt of a grant doesn’t take the group that threshold for the current year.
Activities
- Activities can be provided for children and young people, or for families, depending on what you understand will best meet the needs of your local community, but they encourage a wide range of different activities which are fun, and interesting to children and young people. Activities should be open to youngsters with no previous experience, and give them the chance to try new things, and learn new skills. Activities should be as accessible as possible.
- It’s important to us that you involve your community (including young people themselves) in the design, development, and delivery of the activities you’re planning. they feel that your project or activity will be more successful as a result. They are keen to see applications which bring people together and build strong relationships in and across communities.
Targeting and Recruitment
- The scheme is open to school aged children and young people, up to age 16 who are eligible for and receiving means tested free school meals, 85% of beneficiaries MUST be free school meals beneficiaries. Children and young with Special Educational Needs are eligible up to age 25. Up to 15% of beneficiaries can be other children/ young people who struggle to access healthy food and safe activities in holiday periods.
Eligibility Criteria

Community groups, charities, social enterprises, or other charitable organisations from the third sector that:
- Have a constitution or other relevant governance document
- Have a management committee/board of directors/trustees of at least three unrelated people, none of whom have significant control
- Have a bank account under the name of the group with at least two unrelated signatories
- Have a child safeguarding policy that includes:
- Definitions of abuse and signs of abuse
- Reporting procedure in case of disclosure
- Named Safeguarding Officer
- That the organisation will ensure that the necessary checks are carried out through the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly Criminal Records Bureau) at the appropriate level on all relevant paid and volunteer staff

- Have Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificates for staff involved in food preparation
- Are based in or supporting people living in the Leeds Metropolitan District Area.
Criteria

They are inviting applications for these grants from eligible organisations based on the following criteria:
- Projects must be delivered in the Leeds Metropolitan District and must prioritise children/ young people who are eligible for and receiving means tested free school meals, 85% of beneficiaries MUST be free school meals beneficiaries, or children with Special Educational Needs
- Up to 15% to be other children/ young people who struggle to access healthy food and safe activities in holiday periods
- The programme is for primary and secondary school age pupils up to 16. Young people with Special Educational Needs can participate to the age of 25.
- They seek applications from a diverse range of organisations, and to support projects across the whole Leeds Metropolitan District. Organisations can apply for one, or more than one project. Partnership bids with inexperienced or unincorporated groups are welcome particularly where this would reach more beneficiaries, or areas in the city.
- The scheme is funded through the Department for Education, and meets the objectives set out in its Healthy Activities and Food Programme.

Based on national DfE guidance, applications must:
- deliver at least 4 hours a day, 4 days a week, for at least 1 week in the Easter holiday, 4 weeks of the summer holiday, and for 1 week at Christmas, and offer a hot meal (usually lunch), if this is not the case, applications must explain why. Other healthy snacks, breakfast and drinks can be included.
- Offer fun and positive engaging healthy activities for children, young people including sport & physical activity, dance, outdoor activities, games, arts/ craft. Activities may be for children, or for children and their parents/carers.
- Activities must include 60 minutes of physical exercise/activity per day
- Include cookery/ food related activities that improve the skills and confidence of local families to make affordable, healthy meals, and introduce children and young people to new flavours and foods and to understand nutrition
- Connect children and families to relevant support services locally
- Provide new experiences which children and young people may not have accessed before, including trips to, for example coast, countryside or attractions (Day trips only)
- Be open to and support children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
