The Inclusive Spaces Grant Program supports licensed child care providers (excluding out-of-school care programs) in creating more inclusive and accessible environments for all children.
Funding is available for minor capital improvements and renovations of existing facilities to improve their accessibility, such as wheelchair ramps and elevators, as well as for projects that promote belonging and equity for children from diverse cultural, social, or linguistic backgrounds, such as purchasing multi-cultural literature and resources and developing sensory-friendly spaces.
Streams
- Infrastructure improvements – Renovations to existing facilities to enhance accessibility and inclusivity, such as wheelchair ramps, elevators or adaptive washrooms.
- Equipment and resource acquisition – Purchasing items that promote inclusion, such as assistive technology, sensory equipment, culturally relevant materials or adaptive play structures.
Funding Information
- The Alberta government has committed a maximum of $15 million over 2 years for the Inclusive Spaces Program Grant (2024–26).
Eligible Projects
- For a project to be eligible under the Inclusive Spaces Program Grant, it must support child care needs for one or more of the following vulnerable and/or diverse communities:
- Lower income families
- Indigenous families
- Lone-parent families
- Families in underserved communities, including Black and racialized families
- Families of children with disabilities and children needing enhanced or individual supports
- Families with caregivers who are working non-standard hours
- Families with limited or no access to ELCC programs and services in the children’s official language
Eligibility Criteria
- Eligible Applicants
- Existing non-profit and private daycare and preschool facilities and family day home agencies
- Out-of-school care programs are ineligible for funding as they are not included under the Canada-Alberta Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement funding.
