TDR, the UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) together with WHO’s Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) and Climate Change, Health and Environment Team at WHO’s Regional Office for Africa (AFRO), are pleased to announce this joint call for research proposal applications from consortiums of collaborating institutions in Africa to address implementation research priorities for One Health for vector-borne diseases (VBDs) in the context of climate change.
This call for proposals is limited to lead institutions that can organize a two-country partnership of collaborating institutions (Consortium), whereby the lead institution from one African country has demonstrated a proven track record and strong capacity, expertise and experience in implementing One Health research projects. The lead institution will twin and partner with another institution from another African country for the benefit of joint research, reciprocal and mutual capacity building, cooperation, coordination co-learning, sharing of information/knowledge and communication in order to address joint One Health research priorities in the countries that are part of the Consortium.
The Consortium that will undertake the twinning approach will present a selection rationale for the two partner institutions that strategically takes into account the complementary strengths of the two institutions as well as existing opportunities and challenges within the specific country environments for One Health implementation and priorities for action. The Consortium will also clearly state in the proposal the synergies and mutual benefits that the Consortium may bring to promote sustainable One Health institutional capacity building and cooperation for research for policy-making.
This call is limited to applicants from institutions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) that have been engaged in One Health research and capacity building.

Successful applications from three consortiums will be selected and awarded grants up to US$ 100 000 each for a 12-month period.
Eligibility Criteria
- This research programme has a selective nature. It seeks to identify unique established institutions, consortiums or networks with expertise and a track record in One Health for vector-borne diseases in the context of climate change and for collaborating institutions that would benefit from a new influx of funding to advance their current One Health work and activities.
- TDR is committed to Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity in science. Researchers are encouraged to apply irrespective of gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religious, cultural and social backgrounds, or (dis)ability status.
- When data is included, it should be disaggregated at least by sex and age and other social stratifiers as appropriate, e.g. education level, income, self-reported gender identity, social status or (dis)ability, wherever possible.
- Plans for ensuring sex- and age-disaggregated data and gender analysed data should be clearly stated in the research application and considered in the early stages of the project design process.
- Eligibility is limited to applications from the African Region.
