International Development Research Centre (IDRC), in collaboration with the Israel Science Foundation (ISF), the Azrieli Foundation, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), has announced the third call for proposals in the Joint Canada-Israel Health Research Program, in order to support Canadian and Israeli researchers, who will work with collaborators from low- and middle-income countries, to explore new frontiers in overcoming therapeutic resistance in high fatality cancers.
The Program seeks to support fundamental research at the cutting-edge of biomedical science. This third call for proposals is directed toward biomedical sciences in cancer, while building capacity and furthering the knowledge-base in low and middle income countries
Objectives
The specific objectives of this program are:
- To advance research and discovery in the biomedical sciences;
- To encourage scientific collaboration between Canadian and Israeli researchers and trainees; and
- To build capacity in biomedical science and foster scientific relations and collaborations with researchers and trainees in low and middle income countries.
Research Areas
Potential topics may include, but are not limited to the following:
- tumor heterogeneity;
- novel approaches to cancer therapy;
- development of predictive models of cancer;
- tumor microenvironment;
- cancer-related biochemical signaling networks;
- cancer metabolism;
- pathogenesis of infection associated cancers.
Eligibility Criteria
- Each team must include only two Principal Applicants (PAs), one in Canada and one in Israel.
- All other researchers (including those from low and middle income countries) must participate as collaborators. Ensure collaborators are identified in the application as specified (All collaborators must be listed in the participant table and meaningful collaborators must include a biosketch.
- For the purposes of this call, a collaborator can be an individual who contributes to the proposed activities of the grant and who would be one or more of the following:
- An independent researcher; or
- A knowledge user; or
- A trainee.
- Applicants must include a Collaboration Plan for integrating researchers in low and middle income countries and establishing long-term scientific relationships with them. This could include a range of activities that support the research and training objectives of your proposal, and takes advantage of this funding opportunity to design a collaborative international research project (see how to apply section).
- As a minimum eligibility requirement, all proposals must support at least one of the following activities aimed at supporting capacity and scientific relationships:
- significant training opportunities such as scientific workshops, graduate training in Canada or Israel, or summer schools benefiting researchers/trainees in eligible low and middle income countries;
- inclusion of trainees from low and middle income countries in the carrying out of the research; and/or
- inclusion of established researchers from low and middle income countries in the carrying out of the research.
