Leeds Community Foundation is seeking applications for Leeds Healthy Holidays Grants to provide onsite activity with a hot nutritious meal, although they are open to other options to reach more young people. Supported by the Department for Education’s Holiday Activities and Food Programme, this Fund will support projects that promote healthy, fun enriched holidays across the whole of Leeds, particularly for children and young people eligible for Free School Meals, through providing Healthy Holiday activities.
Projects should provide food and engaging activities for school-aged young people over the Summer and Christmas holiday periods, and should prioritise children who are eligible for free school meals. Other vulnerable children, including those who have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, can be included.

Fund Details
- Projects should consist of engaging activities and offer food to attendees, though consideration will be given to applications from organisations who could provide activity-only provision across the scheme.
- Activities must be delivered safely – they expect that in-person delivery will be possible in the Summer and Christmas holidays in 2021
- Projects should normally provide a nutritious hot lunch for each child, additional meals such as breakfast can also be offered if you wish.
- Exceptionally a healthy/nutritionally balanced cold or packed lunch can be offered where it supports the delivery of activities, or can demonstrate that more children or families will be reached. They wish to reach all young people on free school meals, those who attend both primary and secondary education.
- They would expect projects to consider the needs of families as a whole where food poverty impacts on the family, projects can provide nutritional guidance to young people and their families to help sustain the benefits of the projects
- Evidence of staff/volunteers holding Level 2 Food Hygiene and food allergy certificates will be required.
- Organisations providing food must comply with Leeds City Council’s Guidance note for community projects providing food to the public and be mindful of the Department for Education’s Schools food standard.
- Applications should be focused on a defined area. They need to reach all free school meals eligible children, so applications are sought from every part of the Leeds Metropolitan District.
- They need applications which will meet the needs of young people who receive free school meals in every ward. They intend to fund new proposals as part of this call from every area of the city.
- They also welcome applications which reach young people in food need who are not supported by Free School Meals, such as those with no recourse to public funds and those who have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
- Activity must be delivered in the school Summer and Christmas holidays. Please set out in your application whether it is for Summer, Christmas or both. (They expect Summer provision to cost slightly more than Xmas as it is over more weeks)
- Based on national evidence of what is effective, groups should aim to ensure provision of at least 4 hours a day, 4 days a week, for at least 4 weeks of the summer holiday, either by delivering at that level themselves or by coordinating with others in their local area. Successful applicants will be introduced to other providers in their areas
- Based on Leeds Community Foundation’s own learning, they would encourage groups to consider the following:
- Co-ordinating provision with other local groups, schools, or community hubs to ensure more comprehensive local coverage, and a varied experience.
- Connecting families to relevant support services locally
- Using food ingredients or meals sourced though food redistribution and local partners. This can include Catering Leeds, FareShare, Rethink Food and Hamara (for culturally specific food).
Who can apply?
Community groups, charities, social enterprises or other charitable organisations from the third sector that:
- Have a constitution or other relevant governance document
- Have a management committee/board of directors/trustees of at least three unrelated people, none of whom have significant control
- Have a bank account under the name of the group with at least two unrelated signatories
- Informal (unincorporated) groups can apply up to a maximum of £5,000 as long as their annual income in their last set of accounts does not exceed £10,000, or if receipt of a grant doesn’t take the group above that threshold for the current year.
- Have a child safeguarding policy that includes:
- Definitions of abuse and signs of abuse
- Reporting procedure in case of disclosure
- Named Safeguarding Officer
- That the organisation will ensure that the necessary checks are carried out through the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly Criminal Records Bureau) at the appropriate level on all relevant paid and volunteer staff
- That the organisation will ensure that all relevant paid and volunteer staff receive appropriate training on Safeguarding
- Have Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificates for staff involved in food preparation
- Are based in or supporting people living in the Leeds Metropolitan District Area
- They will accept a limited number of ‘Activity Only’ applications from specialist groups as long as they can provide activity across the scheme, and demonstrate and report engagement with the target group of young people
