The U.S. Consulate General, Public Affairs Section in Chennai is seeking applications for its program entitled “One to Many: Exchange Alumni Workshops.
Objectives
Successfully organize, implement, and evaluate a series of interactive, knowledge-sharing workshops led by U.S. government-sponsored program alumni infour South Indian cities on themes identified by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Consulate General Chennai (PAS Chennai). Organize and conduct alumni capacity-building training on the margins of these workshops based on expressed alumni needs.
Program Goals
- Motivate and activate U.S. government-sponsored program alumni to redefine what it means to be an alumnus/alumna through focused, intentional, alumni-driven action, as evidenced by:
- Increased alumni activity/initiation of U.S. program alumni-related public outreachin South India with broader engagement across India as feasible and appropriate
- Increased alumni contributions to dedicated alumni social media platforms
- Increased alumni participation in existing U.S. program alumninetworks across India and globally
- Build U.S. program alumni capacity to serve as change-makers in their respective communities, as evidenced by:
- Greater understanding of and attention to the expressed needs of U.S. program alumni
- Successful organization of capacity-building sessions (public speaking, digital media training, grant writing, financial planning, communication skills for leadership, etc.)
- Demonstrated utilization of knowledge gained through capacity-building sessions
- Empower U.S. program alumnito convene, inform, engage, influence, and inspire their professional sectors, local communities, and the general public on priority policy issuesincluding: Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM); safety, inclusion, and equality;crisis management and resilience; andaccess to justice, as evidenced by:
- Initiation of sustainable thematic networks or information-sharing platformsorganized/led by U.S. program alumni
- Improved public understanding of and appreciation for U.S. policy positions on identified thematic issues (as outlined by the U.S. Consulate General in Chennai) and how U.S. program alumni are advancing shared values and priorities
- Improved public understanding of and appreciation for the variety of U.S. government-funded exchange programs
- Broaden the visibility and influenceof the U.S. Consulate General in Chennai into non-elite, rural, regional-language speaking areas of the consular district, as evidenced by:
- Improved public knowledge and understanding in Tier 3 and 4 cities in South India about the positive work of the U.S. Consulate General in Chennai and how U.S. program alumni are advancing their shared values and priorities
- Demonstrated utilization of translated lessons learned and applied by local South Indian communities
Themes
- Women in STEAM: This workshop will review the evolution and advancement of women in scientific research and innovation, and explore policies of organizations that champion the interest of women in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (STEAM).
- Safety, Inclusion, and Equality: This workshop will examine strategies to prevent and address violence and discrimination against members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex (LGBTQI). The grantee and PAS Chennai will collaboratively identify IVLP alumni from recent cohorts to serve as key resource persons (trainers).
- Crisis Management and Resilience in South India: South India is frequently exposed to both natural and man-made disasters. This workshop will forge links and encourage information-sharing between individuals responsible for crisis planning and response in South India.
- Access to Justice in Rural Communities in a Tier-3 city in Tamil Nadu in the Tamil language: This workshop will provide insights to legal professionals, law enforcement officials, NGO leaders, activists, and members of various communities in Tamil Nadu about the U.S. justice system including legal aid and access to justice programs for the rural poor.
Eligibility Criteria
- Eligibility is open to all non-profit, non-governmental organizations. Individuals are not eligible for an award under this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO). Organizations may sub-contract with other entities, but only one, non-profit, non-governmental entity can be the prime recipient of the award. When sub-contracting with other entities, the responsibilities of each entity must be clearly defined in the proposal.
- Cost sharing or matching is not required for this funding opportunity.
- Pre-award costs are not an allowable expense for this funding opportunity.
- This award does not allow for construction activities or costs.
- U.S. Consulate General, Chennai grants/cooperative agreements cannot be used to fund religious or partisan political activity; fundraising campaigns; commercial projects; scientific research; projects whose primary aim is the institutional development of the organization, or illegal activities.
