UNESCO Islamabad seeks the services of organizations to engage community and youth in safeguarding heritage and promote heritage entrepreneurship through capacity building and awareness raising.
The future of Pakistan’s remaining heritage will depend largely on the decisions and actions of the present generation of young people who will soon become the leaders and decision-makers of tomorrow. Recognizing these facts, UNESCO Islamabad with the support of Government of Italy is funding a project focusing on engaging the community and school going youth in safeguarding cultural heritage.
UNESCO Islamabad plans to achieve this through capacity building of teachers (male/female), engaging the community living close to heritage sites, general awareness raising through social and electronic media, and developing liaison between the community and Provincial Directorates of Archaeology.
Objectives
The project aims at enhancing the role of communities and youth in protection of the rich heritage of Pakistan complementing the efforts of the Government(s). The project is based on one of the strategic objectives of the World Heritage Convention, which asks for enhancing the role of communities in heritage protection. The following are objectives will be achieved through the implementation of the project:
- School going youth engaged in safeguarding the cultural heritage through teachers capacity building in integrating heritage into teaching and learning, and resource material development.
- The community and youth mobilized to safeguard the cultural heritage through capacity building and promoting heritage entrepreneurship.
- The Government(s) mobilized and capacitated to engage the community to take measures for Safeguarding Cultural Heritage.
Tasks
Within the framework of the culture component of the AICS-UNESCO project, the successful organization working closely with Department/Directorate of Archaeology, Punjab and UNESCO Islamabad will undertake the tasks:
- Submit an inception report and work plan on the implementation of activities and completion of deliverables.
- Obtain necessary permissions from the Government of KP to implement the project activities.
- Undertake a rapid survey to understand the situation, recent challenges and potential of heritage entrepreneurship (tour guide, crafts, souvenirs, photography of historic dresses etc.) as well as engaging community and youth (school going and out of school) in safeguarding the Rohtas Fort.
- Undertake awareness raising meetings/events with the community living inside Rohtas Fort focusing on heritage entrepreneurship, heritage and sustainable development and mobilize/ identify the young residents (at least 30-both male and female) of Rohtas Town interested to participate in relevant trainings (Tour guide, craft/souvenir etc).
- Develop training module and organize training workshops on potential areas/trades.
- Develop linkages of the trained male/females with relevant Government (Department of Archeology and Tourism) and relevant private institutions.
- An article on the theme of role of community in heritage safeguarding published in at least two renown papers (English and Urdu).
- Engage the schools situated inside Rohtas Fort:
- Through delivering a training workshop and developing a brief training module for teachers (focusing on Rohtas Fort) helping them to better teach students (boys/girls) to understand the value of Rohtas Fort and other cultural heritage, and enable them to develop positive social behaviors to actively contribute to the protection of cultural and natural heritage of their community.
- Advocate with Department of Education Punjab to make it part of the school curriculum specifically for schools located inside Rohtas Fort.
- Engage students in heritage awareness activities (co and extra-curricular).
- Video and photo document all the workshops/events and prepare a 3-5 minutes documentary featuring the importance of heritage site (Rohtas Fort) highlighting the need of responsible behavior of visitors at a heritage site.
Deliverables
The organization is expected to deliver the following:
- Inception and survey report explaining the challenges and potential along with detailed workplan.
- Awareness raising meetings/events organized.
- Training modules on heritage entrepreneurship.
- At least 30 young male and female trained and linkages developed or homebased work established.
- Schools with in the vicinity of Rohtas Fort engaged in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities including heritage entrepreneurship trainings, children.
- Two articles published.
- A final report with all annexes including videos, photos, PowerPoints, modules, attendance sheets.
Requirements
Organizations applying for the call could be academic institutions or NGO’s with strengths in the following areas:
- Strengths and experience in working with local community and youth (School and out of School) in heritage awareness, safeguarding and promoting tourism.
- Experience in business and entrepreneurship development, trainings in heritage entrepreneurship and engaging schools in heritage awareness.
Desirable strengths include:
- Experience in managing projects related to promoting culture for sustainable development.
- Strong networking with relevant stakeholders (Government and non-government).
