Deadline: 11-Nov-20
The British Academy is accepting applications for the BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants Program, it stands as one of the Academy’s highest profile programmes with awards made to academics working at around 100 Institutions around the UK.
The BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants are available to support primary research in the humanities and social sciences.
Funding Information
- These awards, up to £10,000 in value and tenable for up to 24 months, are provided to cover the cost of the expenses arising from a defined research project.
Eligible Cost
Funds may be sought to cover the direct expenses incurred in planning, conducting, and developing the research, including:
- project planning and development costs (cost of travel for discussion in the UK and overseas; initial workshops with potential partners)
- travel and maintenance for UK scholars; including travel to disseminate results of the research at conferences held either in the UK or abroad
- travel and maintenance for overseas scholars engaged in collaborative research activity with UK partner(s)
research assistance (based in UK or abroad) - workshops or conferences to advance the programme of research (principally the costs of travel and maintenance for key participants, though organisational costs may be considered)
- consumables
- specialist software
- costs of interpreters in the field
Ineligible Cost
- The following items are not currently eligible for funding (applicants registered with special needs may consult the Academy about possible exceptions): institutional overheads, or any element that should properly be ascribed to institutional overheads; computer hardware including laptops, electronic notebooks, digital cameras, etc; books and other permanent resources; the preparation of camera-ready copy, copy-editing, proof-reading, indexing, nor any other editorial task; subventions for direct production costs (printing, binding, distribution, marketing etc); costs of publication in electronic media; payment to the principal researcher(s) in lieu of salary, or for personal maintenance at home; replacement teaching costs; travel and maintenance expenses for purposes such as lecture tours or to write up the results of research.
Use of grant
- Unless otherwise stated, all awards must be held in a research active institution.
- The Award Holder and Host Organisation must ensure that the Award is used only for the activities specified by the British Academy.
- The Award is to support the research project and related activities described in the application and against which performance will be assessed. If it is proposed to vary the project or programme in any significant way, prior approval must be sought from the British Academy.
- The Award may be used only for eligible items as outlined in the scheme notes, and in accordance with the activities originally requested in the application. If any exceptions have been approved, they will be specified in the Award Letter.
- The Host Organisation must ensure that enough resources are provided to support the activities described in the Award Letter. This includes adequate office and laboratory space and access to essential equipment and facilities.
- Expenditure cannot be vired between budget headings without prior written permission from the British Academy.
- Applicants must inform the British Academy of the outcomes of any other applications relating to the project. In cases where simultaneous applications to the British Academy and to another funding agency covering the same elements of a project are both successful, the applicant should decide which of the two awards to accept. Only if there is no duplication of expenditure under any of the budget heads, and no unnecessary inflation of a project, will an applicant be permitted to retain both awards (subsequent requests to alter the plan of research simply to allow the applicant to retain both awards are unlikely to be considered favourably). There is no objection to the applicant holding awards both from the British Academy and from another funding agency to cover separate elements of a project.
- Any items of equipment that may have been exceptionally agreed, and any research resources purchased with the help of a British Academy grant, must be deposited on the expiry of the grant with an institution (usually the recipient’s home institution, or otherwise as agreed with the British Academy). Such items do not become the personal property of the Award Holder.
Eligibility Criteria
- Awards are open to postdoctoral scholars (or equivalent) who are ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom.
- Applications require the approval of the applicant’s employing institution, but are not limited to those of any particular status (e.g. Lecturer, Professor etc).
- Application may be made by independent scholars (who should choose ‘independent scholar’ as the relevant choice from the list of organisations in Flexi-Grant).
- Co-applicants may be from anywhere in the world, but the Principal Applicant must be ordinarily resident in the UK.
Ineligible
- The Academy does not have any funds available to provide funding for students. Funding is provided for research at post-doctoral level only.
- No Small Grant funds can be used to pay for the salary or for the time of either the PI or a Co-I. If you do want to include salary costs for a consultant, they must be listed as an Other Participant.
- Duplicate applications for the same purpose to more than one Academy scheme will not be accepted.
