The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is seeking applications from qualified U.S. and Non-U.S. organizations to fund a program entitled “Community Roots Project” with an aim to support efforts by Government of Guatemala (GOG), civil society, private sector and community actors to address the underlying causes of violence and migration in areas that are both a high source of migration of under-aged Guatemalans and characterized by a high level of violence in communities not served by USAID’s CONVIVIMOS Project—a violence prevention initiative that focuses, primarily, in the Department of Guatemala.
The intent of the Community Roots Project is to contribute to GOG and USG objectives of promoting development and decreasing violence and migration by creating educational, athletic, cultural, and employment opportunities for youth in targeted areas, thus addressing some of the underlying causes of migration.
Objectives
- Support community commissions to design, implement and promote evidence-based violence prevention activities to address some of the underlying causes of violence and migration in targeted areas;
- Strengthen and mobilize municipal and national stakeholders and resources to develop and implement municipal-level integrated violence and migration prevention plans to address some of the underlying causes of violence and migration in targeted areas;
- Mobilize private sector involvement in violence and migration prevention activities that create educational, athletic, cultural, entrepreneurship and employment opportunities for youth in areas that are a high source of migration of under-aged Guatemalans
- Support secondary prevention projects in close coordination with municipal and local authorities.
Funding Information: Subject to funding availability, USAID intends to provide $40 million in total USAID funding over a five (5) year period.
Eligibility Criteria
- U.S. and non-US organizations may participate.
- USAID welcomes applications from organizations which have not previously received financial assistance from USAID.
- Applicants must have established financial management, monitoring and evaluation processes, internal control systems, and policies and procedures that comply with established U.S. Government standards, laws, and regulations.
- The Recipient must be a responsible entity.
- For-profit applicants must note that USAID policy prohibits the payment of fee/profit for recipients under assistance instruments. Forgone profit does not qualify as cost-share or leverage.
