The World Cancer Research Fund International is seeking proposals from anywhere in the world except the Americas (North America, Central America including the Caribbean, and South America) for its Research Grant Programme .
The aim of this grant programme is to fund research that helps elucidate the role of diet, nutrition (including body composition) and physical activity on cancer.
Programme Themes
- Mechanisms Research Theme: WCRF encourages research that explores the molecular, cellular and physiological mechanisms that help explain the biological connection between relevant exposures and cancer development or progression, and so help the inference of causality.
- Host Factors Research Theme: WCRF encourages research into the factors that might explain the variability between people in their susceptibility to cancer or the biological abnormalities predisposing to it.
- Likely Causal Links Theme: WCRF encourages research into the role that diet, nutrition (including body composition) and physical activity can play in assisting cancer patients overcome the side-effects of treatment, to improve their quality of life during and after the completion of treatment, to reduce the risk of distant metastasis, second primaries and local cancer recurrence and ultimately to prolong survival.
Types of Grants
The Regular Grant Programme comprises two main grant types:
- Investigator Initiated Grants: Investigator Initiated Grants (IIGs) are awarded to Principal Investigators for a maximum of £350,000 for up to four years, with a limit of £100,000 for any one year.
- Pilot Grants: Pilot Grants (PGs) are intended as start-up funds for pilot research to allow the development of innovative ideas, new methodologies and new research tools relevant to our Research Themes. These grants are for a maximum of £60,000 in total for up to two years.
Eligibility Criteria
- Grant applications are open to a Principal Investigator based at a research institution from any country outside the Americas (North America, Central America including the Caribbean, and South America).
- The AICR Research Grant Programme accepts applications from the Americas.
- World Cancer Research Fund International encourages international collaborations. Please note that although the Principal Investigator of an application cannot be from an institution based in the Americas, coapplicants and collaborators can be based in those countries, and a portion of the research work can be carried out at their institutions.
- Applications from low- and middle-income countries are also encouraged, such as for high quality studies that explore relevant exposure-outcome links in underresearched regions or populations, but applicants should ensure the relevant expertise has been secured, for example through appropriate international collaborations.
