Applications Open for the 6th Round of Digital News Innovation Fund!

Deadline: 3 December 2018

Applications are now open for the 6th round of Digital News Innovation Fund (DNI Fund) which is a European programme that’s part of the Google News Initiative, an effort to help journalism thrive in the digital age.

For this final round of funding, the driving theme for Medium and Large projects will be “monetisation and diversification”.

Funding Categories

There are three categories of funding available:

  • Prototype projects: open to organizations—and to individuals—that meet the eligibility criteria, and require up to €50k of funding. These projects should be very early stage, with ideas yet to be designed and assumptions yet to be tested. They will fast-track such projects and will fund 100 percent of the total cost.
  • Medium projects: open to organizations that meet the eligibility criteria and require up to €300k of funding. They will accept funding requests up to 70 percent of the total cost of the project. Important: All medium applications need to include a clearly defined monetisation component.
  • Large projects: open to organisations that meet the eligibility criteria and require more than €300k of funding. They will accept funding requests up to 70 percent of the total cost of the project. Funding is capped at €1 million. All large applications need to include a clearly defined monetisation component.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The DNI Fund is open to for-profit organisations, non-profit organisations and individuals that aim to produce original journalism and to enlighten citizens with trustworthy journalistic content, whose projects focus on encouraging a more sustainable news ecosystem.
  • Established publishers, online-only players, news startups, publisher consortia, national or international associations, companies and individuals are all eligible to apply.
  • Incorporated organisations must be incorporated in the EU or EFTA.
