Deadline: 1-Dec-2025
The Earth Journalism Network is offering media grants to newsrooms and media organizations in coastal countries, with particular focus on Ghana, Mexico, and the Philippines, to support in-depth and enterprise reporting projects, initiatives to train journalists and other activities designed to increase media coverage and the capacity of journalists to report on 30×30 marine conservation targets.
EJN aims to fund projects that train journalists or produce media coverage on government commitments to the 30×30 target, the effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas, the impact of global industries on marine conservation, the role of Indigenous peoples and local communities, the use of advanced technologies for managing MPAs, policy and financial mechanisms supporting the 30×30 goal, and ongoing efforts to enhance marine conservation in international waters.
Applications from Ghana, Mexico, and the Philippines will be prioritized for this opportunity. The grants will support projects that both train journalists and generate high-quality coverage related to marine conservation.
EJN plans to support five organizations with grants of $10,000 USD each, with one grant allocated to each focus country and two to applicants from any other eligible coastal nations. Projects are expected to begin in January 2026 and conclude by December 2026, following notifications in December 2025.
Eligibility is limited to newsrooms and media organizations in coastal countries with marine borders. Civil society organizations, NGOs, advocacy groups, and academic institutions are not eligible.
Applications will only be accepted in English or Spanish, though projects may produce content in any language suitable for their audience. Former EJN grantees may apply, provided they do not currently hold an active EJN grant. Applicants must also be transparent about the use of generative AI tools in proposal preparation.
Submissions will be evaluated based on proposal quality, relevance to grant objectives, project impact and design, innovation, cost-effectiveness, applicant capacity, and geographic diversity.
Applicants must submit a detailed and justified budget using the provided template. While a portion of the grant may be used to purchase equipment, such costs should be minimal and clearly linked to project outcomes. Co-financing is permitted but not required. Published work under these grants must acknowledge EJN support with the tagline: “This story was produced with support from Internews’ Earth Journalism Network.”
Applications can be completed online by logging into or creating an account on the EJN platform, with the option to save drafts before submission.
The deadline for applications is November 24, 2025, at 11:59 PM (Pacific/Niue).
