RFPs: Michael Jacobs Travel Writing Grant Program

UNESCO-Transcultura launches Open Call for FondosCultura (Round 3)

Deadline: 01-Dec-2025

The Michael Jacobs Travel Writing Grant Program invites journalists and writers from around the world to apply for an opportunity that supports excellence in travel journalism.

The grant awards USD 10,000 to support the research and writing of the selected article or book. This amount will be paid after applicable taxes have been deducted and will be distributed as follows: USD 5,000 upon the announcement of the winner, and USD 5,000 upon completion of the project and submission for publication.

In addition to financial support, the winner will be invited to serve as a jury member for the next edition of the Michael Jacobs Travel Writing Grant. Journalists and writers of any nationality are welcome to apply.

Submissions should include a detailed presentation of the proposed article or book, along with a description and a writing sample of at least 1,500 words to assess narrative ability. An autobiography of no more than 400 words (in Spanish or English) describing the applicant’s experience as a travel journalist and motivation for applying must also be provided, as traditional CVs or résumés will not be accepted.

Additionally, candidates must submit one piece of published writing, either in print or digital media, as applicants must have published at least one article or book at the time of applying.

The submitted work must focus on travel journalism in Latin America or Spain. The project does not need to be complete, as the grant is designed to support an ongoing project. However, applicants are expected to provide evidence of research or investigation related to the location they intend to report on.

The jury will consider the narrative quality and journalistic depth of the projects when selecting the winner. The official announcement of the winner will take place at the Hay Festival Cartagena de Indias 2026, from 29 January to 1 February 2026.

To apply, applicants must complete the application form by 1 December 2025 at 11:59 p.m. (Colombian time / GMT-5).
