Kyoto World Water Award 2022
- Focusing on the resilience and history of development that has recovered from natural disasters, epidemics, etc. while fusing Kyoto’s tradition and innovation.
- Finding the basics that activities based on the unique social and cultural characteristics of the local community will lead to the sustainable development of the region.
Based on this way of thinking, they commend excellent organizations that are engaged in energetic grassroots activities to solve water problems that contribute to the future of developing countries. The purpose is to appeal the importance of grassroots activities by sending information to.
Objectives
- Water-related issues are related not only to the Goal 6 (Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but also the other SDGs of the 2030 Agenda adopted at the UN General Assembly in 2015.
- The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 has made us aware of the importance of safe and sustainable water and sanitation as well as the necessity of building a resilient society.
- They became aware of Kyoto’s resilience and its long history of development, where people pursued creativity through cultural exchange and at the same time valued harmony between tradition and innovation.

They came to the conclusion that activities harmonized with unique social and cultural dimensions in the project area, would ultimately lead to sustainable development. Based onsuch a belief, the Kyoto World Water Grand Prize was created to honor a distinguished organization involved in grass-roots activities related to solving water problems in developing countries. It also aims to improve the quality of grass-roots activities and make the importance of such activities known throughout the world.
Award Details
- The winner of the prize will receive 2,000,000 JPY (approximately 18,000 USD, depending on fluctuating exchange rates).
Eligibility Criteria
- Any non-profit organization based in a developing country, which is involved in grass-roots activities aimed at solving water problems through measures consistent with local cultures.
- Countries and territories classified as Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Low-Income Countries (LICs), Lower Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), and Upper Middle-Income Countries (UMICs) from among the OECD’s DAC list.
