Creative New Zealand has launched a call for applications for the Toi Ake Fund.
The Toi Ake Fund is an initiative tailored to iwi, hapu, whakapapa-based ropu and matawaka to cultivate and retain heritage nga toi Maori (Maori arts) and foster their distinctive arts and cultural practices.
Toi Ake projects supported include:
- heritage arts such as nga mahi a Te Whare Pora
- wananga that pass on matauranga and skills of karanga, whaikorero, karakia, moteatea, pao and whakapapa recitation
- contemporary arts projects and the artworks of new wharenui.
Funding Information
- Funding requests can be for projects between $10,000–$75,000.
Outcomes
- To receive funding from Creative New Zealand, your project must achieve one of the long term goals, which is called Strategic Outcomes.
- They also want to support projects that achieve the outcomes of our two cultural strategies: Te Hā o ngā Toi – Māori Arts Strategy 2019-2024 and The Pacific Arts Strategy 2018 – 2023.
- In addition, each funding programme has its own programme purposes and your project needs to achieve one of these purposes: Strategic outcomes, Arts Grants programme purposes, Te Hā o ngā Toi – Māori Arts Strategy 2019 – 2024, The Pacific Arts Strategy 2018 – 2023
Eligibility Criteria
- To apply for the Toi Ake Fund, you must be:
- Tangata Whenua Maori, or your proposed project must be managed or directed by Maori
- a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (each individual).
- New Zealand-based organizations can apply but the organisation must be Maori-led. If an organization is applying for funding on behalf of an individual, that person must also be Maori.
- International arts organizations can apply but the application must show direct benefit to New Zealand arts.
- To be eligible for Creative New Zealand funding:
- Your project or activities must directly benefit New Zealand arts, artists or practitioners.
- You must have a track record of experience and success — this means you must have:
- recognition from peers or experts
- achieved a degree of critical or sales success
- specialised training or practical experience.
