The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) and the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) are co-hosting a program: Supporting New Alliances to End Violence Against Women in Politics and Media, that will bring together women in politics and women in the media to combat violence against women in both of these sectors.
One of the most serious barriers to inclusive democracies and institutions is violence or threats of violence, that directly impact a woman’s ability to participate in politics and in the media. Violence against women in politics and the media includes all physical and online forms of aggression, harassment, coercion, and intimidation against women simply because they are women.
Program Benefits
- A series of online workshops (totaling 90 hours), happening over two years from 2020 to 2022. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate upon completion.
- In this program, selected participants will have access to:
- Safety planning tools, online safety tools for politically active women in both sectors;
- Hostile environment and first aid training for women in media and politically active women;
- Access to and training on a variety of tools designed to assist women in advocacy aimed at political parties, legislators, media houses;
- Access to and training on designing campaigns to raise public awareness of violence against women in politics and media.
- In addition, participants will have the opportunity to participate in bi-monthly online meetings where they can come together to discuss violence against women in politics and media and develop advocacy strategies or campaigns to address the negative impact of violence against women on women’s political participation.
Eligibility Criteria
- To be eligible for this program, applicants must:
- Identify as a woman or non-binary
- Be 18 or older
- Be a citizen or permanent resident of Kenya, Mexico or Sri Lanka
- Be a politically active woman OR a woman in media
- This program is inclusive of all who identify as women, which includes trans women and non-binary people.
