Established through the Daniel and Barbara Chapman Trust, the Chapman Prize recognizes and honors each year the efforts and achievements of individuals and organizations in the U.S. who make significant contributions to American society.
2020 Theme
Health & Wellness: Awarded to a charitable individual or organization who has contributed most significantly to the improvement of health and wellness in the United States. By way of example, contributions may include providing access to quality and affordable health care, initiatives that empower individuals to develop active, healthy lifestyles that begin in childhood and continue through all phases of life, and/or programs that promote healthy environments in homes, schools, and neighborhoods.
Funding Information
- Approximately $80,000-$100,000 will be awarded each year.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
- Are either a U.S. citizen or U.S.-based nonprofit who will use the disbursement exclusively in the U.S.;
- Have been conducting charitable work for at least the last three years;
- Can show demonstrated impact in the selected focus area of the year in which the application is submitted.
- Successful applicants should describe:
- Populations served;
- Extraordinary contributions towards betterment in the selected area;
- Proven record of achievement;
- Demonstrated impact;
- Potential for long term change in the award focus area.
Important Dates
- The selection committee will begin reviewing applications by October 16, 2020.
- The selection committee will complete the review process by November 15, 2020.
- All applicants, regardless of award status, will be notified of the selection committee’s decision by November 30, 2020.
- The 2020 Prize Winner will receive their disbursement by January 29, 2021.

Past Winners
- 2019 Chapman Prize Winner: Opportunity Fund, a California-based program that has served as a trusted partner to small business owners in under-served communities by providing access to capital and fostering a proven path to prosperity through investing in entrepreneurs, received the 2019 Chapman Prize on December 19 in Washington, DC.
- 2018 Chapman Prize Winner: Studio in a School Association, a New York City-based program that serves young people by integrating visual arts into teaching and learning, received the 2018 Chapman Prize on November 28 in Washington, DC.
- 2017 Chapman Prize Winner: The American Red Cross, whose national headquarters are based in D.C., work to deliver vital services from providing relief and support to those in crisis to helping you be prepared to respond in emergencies, received the inaugural Chapman Prize in 2017.
