The Institute for Development Research (IRD) is seeking projects for its “South Expert Sustainable Plants Development Durable Programme (SEP2D)” to support the development and the international cooperation in 22 countries of the intertropical belt.
It aims to reinforce the scientific research on plant biodiversity in these countries, through the strengthening of a partnership culture with the economic operators, the civil society and the political authorities.
SEP2D seeks to participate to the development of this scientific research that would be inclusive of national, sub-regional, regional and international public policy issues.
Project Objectives
The target goals of the SEP2D programme through this call are as follow:
- To consolidate research teams in the Global South, in particular through the development of South-South or South-North cooperation.
- To participate to an increasing of publication of key reference articles.
- To innovate in the domain of valorisation of scientific results.
- To participate to the strengthening of a virtuous cycle between the capacity building of research teams in the Global South and their ability to develop and finance the promotion and the use of national and regional expertise, on a longer term.
Eligibility Criteria
In order to be eligible the projects must:
- Be in the geographical coverage of the SEP2D programme: 22 countries in West Africa, Central Africa, Indian Ocean and South-East Asia
- Be led by an academic institution from one of these 22 countries, and, if possible, be based on a partnership among several research teams and/ or operators that may or may not come from these countries
- And address at least one (and ideally more than one) of the 3 priority research axis (PRA) detailed in the terms of references:
- Multi-layer knowledge of plant biodiversity and plant ecosystems
- Plant resources and their utilization by communities and stakeholder institutions (ecosystem services)
- The strategies and the operational approaches for the sustainable management of plant resources and the conservation of habitats and ecosystem services

- West Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.
- Central Africa: Angola, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and São Tomé and Príncipe.
- Indian Ocean: Madagascar, Bahrain, Comoros, Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles and Sri Lanka.
- South-East Asia: Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Brunei, Timor-Leste.
