The focus areas include arts creation and dissemination activities such as public performances of orchestras, opera, theatre, traditional performing arts, media arts, film festivals and other arts areas; regional cultural promotion activities including activities in regional cultural facilities, historical and cultural landscape awareness and preservation, folk cultural properties public access, revival/restoration, documentation and utilisation; cultural promotion and dissemination organisation activities including performances and exhibitions by amateur culture groups, preservation and transmission of traditional craft skills, and restoration of discontinued traditional craft techniques.
These grants are provided through several streams including the Arts Culture Promotion Fund, subsidies from the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and the Cultural Arts Activity Infrastructure Strengthening Fund financed by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Agency for Cultural Affairs, supporting activities such as creator and artist development, cultural facility enhancement, overseas expansion of creators and high‐quality content aligned with Japan’s global cultural strategy.
Eligible activities span from performances and exhibitions to documentation, restoration, talent development and international outreach. Support is available to arts organisations and facilities, among others, under an annual public call for proposals, with awards determined by specialised committees.
