World Food Programme: Seeking Applications for Innovation Accelerator Programme

Deadline: 28 February 2019

The World Food Programme is inviting applications for its Innovation Accelerator Programme.

WFP’s Innovation Accelerator identifies, nurtures and scales bold solutions to hunger globally. They support WFP innovators and external start-ups and companies through financial support, access to a network of experts and a global field reach.

The Accelerator believes the way forward in the fight against hunger is not necessarily in building grand plans, but identifying and testing solutions in an agile way. It is a space where the world can find out what works and what doesn’t in addressing hunger – a place where we can be bold, and fail as well as succeed.

Benefits

Applicants will receive up to 100,000 USD in funding, mentorship from industry experts and access to the world’s largest humanitarian organisation.

Eligibility Criteria

  • If applicants are a start-up…
    • Their start-up must be incorporated at the time of application. It can be for profit or not for profit.
    • Their innovation must at least be at the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) stage. Proof of concept is preferred.
    • Their proposal must show how working with WFP will serve their long-term strategy.
  • If applicants are a WFP employee…
    • Their team must have evidence of Country Office support and management buy-in.
    • Everybody working at WFP is encouraged to apply, regardless of their contract type or function.
    • They accept project applications from WFP employees who are collaborating with NGOs, government or private sector.

Selection Criteria

Applications to the WFP Innovation Accelerator are scored according to a standard set of criteria, and are reviewed by both internal and external experts. They look for startups that meet the following expectations:

  • Impact for the people they serve and potential to reach Zero Hunger
  • Feasibility, including time to deliver impact, technology maturity, and user traction
  • Level of innovation
  • Financial sustainability with a clear business case that does not rely on WFP funding
  • Team strength, experience, and commitment

  • Allan J Damulira says:

    Hi there,

My name is Allan. I run an LLC that was borne out of a not-for-profit, after the frustration we found with using that channel to impact society and cause meaningful change. The LLC – Trade For The Future – runs like an NGO, pursuing the same objectives of changing society through enhancing productivity, selfsustinance and promoting trade at a micro level.

Recently we started a catfish farm in Nyenga, Buikwe district in Central Uganda. The aim is to run a successful pilot farm, then use it a nucleus to mentor and encourage people in the area to take up catfish farming as a way of improving household incomes, improve diets and eliminate hunger.

Based on that background, I would like to know if we are fundable from this program.

  • Leratang Lekena says:

I am a Mosotho woman who has been trying to start a food preservation initiative whereby I could pull a group or groups of women to harvest wild vegetable (which I believe they are very nutritious at minimum cost. These women would generate income in three or more ways, first by selling wild vegetable to me, secondly by learning how to preserve them from me to sell when they are out of season and thirdly, adding value by developing more enhanced recipes from these vegetables. I apply various methods of preservation, the common and most cost effective being ‘solar drying’.

I would like to know if I can apply for funding to obtain more solar dryers, vegetable cleaning apparatus and packaging materials. There is lucrative market in the off-seasons and in the cities.

We desire also to add value to our farm produce for higher marketability and healthy eating, etc. Other innovations in our group include adult literacy, financial literacy, healthy living, climate change and community development for equipping the young generation to be responsible and accountable to society, etc.
