The Women & Gender Constituency is seeking applications for its “Gender and Climate Solutions Awards 2017”.
The Women and Gender Constituency (WGC), established in 2009, is one of nine observing groups within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Today, it brings together over 20 civil society organizations that are fighting for the voice of women and advocating for their rights in the UNFCCC processes. WGC stands for a just and sustainable future, which ensures climate justice and gender equality.
Award Categories
- Women’s rights and gender equality
- Provides equal access to benefits, brings equal benefits to women, men and youth
- Is intended to reduce, or add to, an additional burden on women’s workload (eg increased family responsibility, increased management of natural resources, etc.)
- Empower women – e.g. Improved accessibility and mobility, improved economic security, improved food security, improved health, access to safe drinking water, etc. (As many benefits as possible)
- Promotes democratic rights and women’s participation by ensuring decision-making by local women and men, women’s groups, cooperatives and communities
- Climate Resilience
- Local management and / or management (decentralized and appropriate)
- Guarantees self-sufficiency and low resource consumption (safe, affordable and sustainable)
- Contributes to mitigating climate change, reducing CO2 emissions and / or climate adaptation (the project is sustainable)
- Scaling and transfer
- Results can be shared, disseminated and scaled-to benefit more than one individual and region
- Shows relationships with other cross-cutting themes such as, but not limited to, peacebuilding, resource constraints, health, water and sanitation – does not increase conflict potential
Award Information
Two tiers of ‘Winners’ will be selected:
- Three top ‘Award Winners’ will be identified, one per category. These three winners will each receive a Seed Grant of 2000 Euros; travel for one representative to attend the Awards Ceremony held at COP23 in Bonn, Germany this November 2017; and 1-year of mentorship activities from the members of the Women and Gender Constituency.
- Up to 30 additional ‘Runners-Up’ will be featured in a full color-publication which will be showcased in a high-level international awards ceremony at COP23, as well as be highlighted on the WGC website.
Eligibility Criteria
- All types of activist, grassroots and women-led organizations and groups working on issues related to climate change are encouraged to apply.
- Only non-governmental initiatives are eligible (local or national government initiatives cannot be considered).
- The activity/initiative should either already have been completed or should be in current operation.
- The initiative must fit within one of the 3 award categories.
