Nominations are now open for Jamnalal Bajaj Awards to felicitate the efforts of women and men who have dedicated their life to Gandhian constructive work and the ideals which Shri Jamnalal Bajaj had cherished all his life.
Shri Jamnalal Bajaj (04.11.1889 – 11.02.1942) was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhiji adopted Jamnalalji as his ‘fifth son’. Jamnalalji took active part in the freedom struggle and courted arrest at several occasions. However, constructive work was his main forte.
He devoted himself to almost all activities included in the Constructive Programme propounded by Gandhiji. Special mention must be made of Jamnalalji’s pioneering efforts in the fields of Goseva (Cow protection), development of Dalits, propagation of Hindi, spread of Khadi and development of Village Industries.
Objectives
- The Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation has instituted four awards which are given annually.
- The awards recognize and reward such individuals who have strived and effectively implemented Gandhian values for amply enriching and bettering the lives of the communities.
- The Foundation has instituted four awards which are given annually to recognize, honor and encourage the outstanding contribution of the selfless people towards the development and welfare of the society, rural community and the nation, at large.
Categories
There are three National Awards and one International Award as listed below:
- National: Constructive Work following Gandhian principles in rural India
- National: Application of Science and Technology for Rural Development
- National: Development and Welfare of Women and Children (instituted in the memory of Padma Vibhushan Smt. Jankidevi Bajaj)
- International: International Award for Promoting Gandhian Values Outside India (presented to an individual holding a foreign passport and nationality)
Award Information
- Each award carries a Citation, a Trophy and a Cash Prize of Rs. 10,00,000 (for the International Award, the Cash Prize is equivalent to foreign exchange).
- Commemorating the 125th Birth Anniversary of Shri Jamnalalji in November 2014, the Foundation increased the earlier prize amount of Rs. 5,00,000 to Rs. 10,00,000 in each award category.
Activities
The activities of the Foundation are briefly noted below:
- Rural Development Work – It has undertaken and supported various projects of rural development programmes especially in villages of Wardha, Maharashtra and in other regions.
- Awards – It gives 3 Awards annually to Indian individuals for outstanding contribution in the fields of Constructive Work, Application of Science and Technology for Rural Development and Development and Welfare of Women and Children; and one International Award for Promoting Gandhian Values Outside India to an individual holding a foreign passport and nationality. Each of the Awards carries a citation, a trophy and a cash Prize of Rs. 10,00,000 (its equivalent in foreign currency being presented to the International Awardee).
Eligibility Criteria
- Constructive Work
- This Award is for an individual / individuals and not for an institution.
- Nominations received from the heads of recognized institutions and other representative bodies and / or from eminent individuals as also those sent by any of them on their own initiative, will be considered for the Awards.
- International Award for Promoting Gandhian Values Outside India
- The Award will be open to individuals with foreign nationality /passport, regardless of race, creed or sex. The individual may or may not be of Indian origin.
- For being considered for the Award, the name of the individual must be recommended, in writing, by persons belonging to any of the following categories, who may be invited by the Foundation to send recommendations:
- Members of the Selection Committee for the Award
- Persons who have received the Award in the past
- Members of National Parliament
- Recipients of Nobel Peace Prize
- The Secretary General of the United Nations Organisation and other officials/leaders in international organisations or institutions whose aims and objects are consistent with the objects of the Awards
- Presidents and Vice-Chancellors of Universities and Professors of Political Science, Philosophy, Religion, Economics, Sociology, Education, Rural Development, Natural Sciences, Environment and Ecology
- Heads of Indian Embassies/Missions abroad and India’s Permanent Representatives to the UNO and similar World organizations
- Heads of Foreign Embassies/Missions in India
- Heads of Academic Institutions and Social Work organizations
- Any other person whom the Trustees may wish to invite to submit proposals for the Award.
- Development and Welfare of Women and Children
- This Award is for a woman/women and not for an institution.
- Women of foreign origin who are residing in India holding an Indian citizenship; and worked for a minimum period of 15 years in the areas of development and welfare of women and children of India, can apply for this award
- Science and Technology for Rural Development
- This Award is for an individual/individuals and not for an institution.
- Nominations received from the heads of recognized institutions and other representative bodies and/or from eminent individuals as also those sent by any of them on their own initiative, will be considered for the Awards.
