The World Food Programme (WFP) is leading a nutrition-focused intervention in the Ouaddai Region of Chad to improve the prevention, treatment, and management of malnutrition among children and women through community participation and strengthened healthcare access.
The focus areas of this initiative include nutrition, malnutrition prevention and treatment. The expected results of the initiative are strengthening and community involvement in the management of acute malnutrition in children aged 6 to 23 months and in pregnant and breastfeeding women is ensured; children and infants with acute malnutrition (MAM) are identified and treated in the National Nutrition Units (UNS); children and infants suffering from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) are referred to the SAM case management program; children aged 6 to 59 months receive nutritional input rations for the treatment of malnutrition; access to healthcare for mothers and children, including access to adequate nutrition during the first 9 months of pregnancy, is improved; the income sources of targeted households are diversified, and their knowledge and practices regarding malnutrition and socio-health risks are improved through support for Mothers’ Clubs.
The establishment of FARNE (Family Nutrition Education and Training Centers) through the Mothers’ Club/the “Mothers of Light” aims to improve the use of agricultural production through nutritional education and malnutrition prevention at the community level. Cash distribution to children under 2 years old and to FEFA (Family Nutrition and Training Centers) is ensured as a method for malnutrition prevention. Educational sessions on essential family practices and nutrition are provided at all FARNE locations. Coordination and the community nutrition surveillance system are strengthened. Implementing actors have the capacity and skills for the implementation of the national protocol, qualitative monitoring, reporting, and the application of operational and strategic guidelines. The level of knowledge of mothers and caregivers on key family practices related to infant and young child feeding, hygiene, and disease prevention is improved. Multi-stakeholder coordination is strengthened at different levels.
This initiative represents a comprehensive community-based approach to tackling malnutrition, focusing on prevention, treatment, education, and empowerment.
By integrating community engagement, nutrition education, and maternal-child health support, the program seeks to create sustainable improvements in nutrition outcomes in the Ouaddai Region. Strengthened coordination among implementing actors ensures that the intervention aligns with national nutrition protocols and delivers lasting impact.
