UNDP is calling for proposals for the Innovation Challenge Call for Community in Lesotho to help people build better and resilient lives.
In support to the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture (MTEC), UNDP will mobilise resources and relevant technical expertise from the ongoing programmes to support the Government initiatives in addressing the effects of plastic waste in the country.
Objective
UNDP and MTEC are soliciting proposals from interested community organizations, youth and women-led organizations, civil society, media and individual innovators for the development and implementation of solutions towards management of plastic waste in Lesotho. The objective of this call is to create a compendium of home-grown solutions, that are consistent with local context and practices, which contribute to the collective response in addressing plastic waste challenges. UNDP will provide up to six (6) grants for the implementation of solutions which demonstrate clear positive impact and strategies to plastic reuse, recycle, reduce, rethink, refuse, repurpose and repair.
Pillars
The Programme comprises three pillars:
- Governance, for Accountability, Social Cohesion and Stability;
- Sustainable and Inclusive Economic Growth and
- Environmental Sustainability, Climate Change and Resilience.
Categories
The grants will be in two categories, based on the following:
- Livelihood development (3 grants), to encourage development of livelihood opportunities from plastic and other waste, to promote Recycling and Repurposing for plastic waste management
- Relevant solutions in the context of the NSDP II priority sectors – manufacturing, ecotourism and creative arts, agriculture and technology and innovation, that may contribute to the reduction of plastic waste
- Solutions which promote economic activities through plastic waste
- Behavioral Change (3 grants) to promote advocacy and communication to encourage Refuse, Reduce and Reuse principles for plastic waste management. Particularly, the grants in this category will target
- Solutions which promote community engagement, advocacy and participation to reduce plastic dependency and reduction of plastic waste
- Solutions which provide education and build knowledge and stewardship for environmental protection and sustainability, plastic waste management and strategies for livelihood generation which will lead to behavioral change.
- Solutions that build a community of action and championship for plastic waste management and environmental sustainability
Eligibility Criteria
The grants are targeted at Lesotho registered entrepreneurs and innovators, organizations and associations of innovators, submissions must be made in line with the above criteria and objectives and be compliant to the following criteria:
- Target groups: the following are the specific target groups for this call:
- Location of the solution: the solution may be implemented in any of the two project pilot areas being Maseru and Maputsoe. Care will be taken to ensure equity in the allocation of grants based on innovativeness and reach.
