The World Food Programme (WFP) is seeking to strengthen nutrition initiatives in Chad’s Lac region, focusing on the prevention and treatment of malnutrition.
This program targets acute malnutrition in children aged 6 to 23 months, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women, with the aim of improving community involvement and support for those at risk.
Key objectives include identifying and treating children and women with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) through community nutrition services and referring severe cases to specialized treatment programs. Children aged 6 to 59 months will receive nutritional rations to support recovery, while maternal and child health services, including access to adequate nutrition during the first nine months of pregnancy, will be enhanced.
The initiative also emphasizes strengthening household resilience through income diversification and community education. Support to Mothers’ Clubs aims to improve knowledge and practices around nutrition and socio-health risks. Programs such as FARNE, delivered through these clubs, will educate communities on better use of agricultural production for nutritional outcomes and prevention of malnutrition at the local level.
Cash distributions for children under two and for pregnant and breastfeeding women will be used as an additional preventive measure. Educational sessions on essential family practices and nutrition will be conducted across all community nutrition networks. Furthermore, the project will reinforce community-level nutrition monitoring and coordination, while building the skills of implementing actors to ensure adherence to national protocols, high-quality reporting, and effective operational and strategic guidance.
The program also seeks to increase mothers’ and caregivers’ knowledge on key family practices related to infant and young child feeding, hygiene, and disease prevention. Multi-stakeholder coordination at various levels will be strengthened to ensure a comprehensive and sustainable approach to tackling malnutrition in the Lac region of Chad.
