Applicants are invited to apply for One Planet Fellowship program with an aim to build a vibrant, highly connected, and intergenerational network of African and European scientist leaders equipped to use a gender lens help Africa’s smallholder farmers adapt to a changing climate.

African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) will lead the management of the Fellowship in partnership with Agropolis Foundation. It is working toward inclusive, agriculture-driven prosperity for Africa by strengthening the production and dissemination of more gender-responsive agricultural research and innovation. They invest in African scientists, research institutions, and agribusinesses so that they can deliver agricultural innovations that better respond to the needs and priorities of a diversity of women and men across Africa’s agricultural value chains.


Inspired by the AWARD Fellowship Model, the One Planet Fellowship entails the following activities:

  • A highly competitive selection process: For candidates who will become One Planet Laureates upon completion of the three-year non-residential fellowship process.
  • A matching (pairing) process: The proposed One Planet Laureates are paired with more established African scientists (Mentors) who are carefully chosen to match their area of expertise and career objectives.
  • A mentoring program: The proposed Laureate-Mentor pairs commence a year-long mentorship relationship and are supported to build successful partnerships geared toward enhancing the Laureates’ career growth.
  • A series of training and scientific events: The proposed Laureates, their Mentors and Learning Partners are supported to attend various AWARD courses including, the Mentoring Orientation Workshops, the Leadership and Science skills courses, and other events jointly organized by AWARD and partners.
  • Advanced Science Training (AST): In the final year of the Fellowship, the best performing proposed Laureates are supported to participate in research placements at internationally recognized research institutes. This process will require the proposed Laureates to work closely with renowned scientists (also referred to as Research Supervisors) from across the world on mutually agreed research projects on climate and agriculture-related issues.
  • Laureates’ ceremony: At the end of the 3-year process, scientists who satisfactorily complete all elements of the Fellowship will be named One Planet Laureates and will join an elite cohort of scientists.

  • Application for the One Planet Fellowship is via an online form available on the Fellowship website.
  • The application form is available in both English, and French and applicants are encouraged to access and submit their application form in their most proficient language.
  • Late or incomplete applications will NOT be considered.
