Akonadi Foundation is re-launching So Love Can Win to assist racial justice movement groups’ capacity to meet demands and/or aid the loss of operational revenue.
The $1 million So Love Can Win Rapid Response Fund will provide general support grants between April and September 2020 to support the sustainability and vibrancy of Oakland’s racial justice movement ecosystem during the pandemic.
Akonadi Foundation supports powerful social change movements, primarily in Oakland, that work to eliminate structural racism and create a racially just society. Akonadi Foundation seeks to stop the criminalization of young people of color and promote responses to harm that nurture wellness and well-being. Since its founding in 2000, the Foundation has given over 1,800 grants totalling $43 million to nonprofit organizations, primarily in the Bay Area as well as across the country.
Funding Information
- Rapid-response grants up to $10,000
- Larger grants may be made on a case-by-case basis
- One-time flexible general support grants on a rolling basis, until the funds are exhausted
- $500,000 disbursed between April and June
- $500,000 disbursed between July and September
Fund Priorities
- Organizations with budgets under $500,000.
- Organizations that advance the leadership of women, trans, queer and non-binary communities; immigrant and undocumented communities; and formerly/currently incarcerated people and their families.
Eligibility Criteria
- Your group is based in Oakland
- Your group is led by Black, Indigenous and People of Color and demonstrates a history of work with Black, Indigenous and People of Color in Oakland
- Has 501(c)(3) status or is fiscally sponsored
- Akonadi is continuing its partnership with the Social Good Fund, which will waive its normal fiscal sponsorship fees to groups that have been approved for a So Love Can Win grant. If you need a fiscal sponsor, please contact Iris Garcia: Iris [at] akonadi.org to discuss options
- Your group employs at least one of the following strategies:
- Organizing: Base-building organizations who mobilize, support, develop, and build power with their members
- Healing: Healing justice collectives and organizations providing accessible and relevant healing, wellness and self-care practices using an anti-racist political frame
- Arts and Culture: Cultural formations that use culture as a tool for racial justice movement building
- Voice: Oakland focused journalism with stories that highlight the racial impact of the pandemic on Black, Indigenous and People of Color communities and use their platform to promote narratives of community leadership, mutual aid, and cultural resilience.
Application Process
- Applicants may apply online or through a scheduled phone interview with Akonadi Foundation program staff. No email applications will be accepted.
- Phone interviews are intended for applicants with accessibility barriers and/or limited technology, as well as applicants who have never applied for a grant.
- Applicants will receive a decision within two weeks of submitting the application.
- Checks or electronic transfers will be sent to approved grantees within five business days of receipt of a signed contract.
