The Andy Hill CARE Fund is inviting proposals for the COVID-19 Response Program to support research that focuses on the impact of COVID-19 on outcomes, research, risks, or well-being for cancer patients.
The COVID-19 pandemic is having a significant impact on cancer patients and survivors. Access to cancer prevention and screening services may be limited or unavailable due to the pandemic.
Applicants must apply under one of two tracks:
- Basic/clinical research: Basic/clinical research projects will seek to understand the fundamental aspects of SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 for cancer patients or test interventions in human volunteers to address the impact of SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 for cancer patients.
- Population-based research: Population-based research projects will explore the factors and trends at the intersection of COVID-19 and cancer that affect the delivery and outcomes of cancer care in populations.
Funding Information
- Up to approximately $100,000 per grant award. Promising projects may be awarded more than $100,000, at the CARE Fund Board’s discretion.
- Grants are awarded to institutions or organizations, not individuals.
- Grants must be used solely for research projects in Washington State at the intersection of COVID-19 and cancer. Projects with collaborations outside of Washington State are allowed, however, the principal investigator and the primary research activities and funding of the project must be within Washington State.
- Project support is for up to one year.
Eligibility Criteria
- Organizations in Washington State including companies, universities, research institutions, local health jurisdictions, tribes, tribal organizations, and Urban Indian Organizations are eligible to apply for a COVID-19 Response Grant.
- Applicant organizations may submit up to a maximum of three applications during the same funding round.
- Applicant organization and the principal investigator must be: 1) working on a project, 2) able to expand an existing project, or 3) able to rapidly start up a new project that focuses on an area at the intersection of COVID-19 and cancer, where CARE funding would demonstrably advance the project.
- Projects awarded by the CARE Fund COVID-19 program in previous cycles are not eligible for funding.
- Non-state of Washington matching funds is not required for the COVID-19 grant award. However, applicants that have matching funds should include those funds in the project budget.

- Call for Proposals Announced: September 30, 2020;
- Letter of Intent: November 13, 2020;
- Proposal Application Deadline: December 4, 2020;
- Award Decision: February 24, 2021;
- Earliest Project Start Date: March 15, 2021;
- Project Support: Up to 1 year from the award date.

- Organizations that intend to submit a full application are highly encouraged to submit a letter of intent (LOI) for each research project. Details about the LOI are included in the program description below. The LOI should be submitted as a single page PDF via email.
