Applications Open for Balkan Transitional Justice Initiative Grants Programme!

Deadline: 19 November 2018

The Balkan Investigative Reporting Network has launched a call for in-depth investigative stories on transitional justice themes in the Balkans.

Grants are offered to ten journalists to cover topics related to truth, justice, accountability, memory, institutional reform and other issues related to dealing with the past. The selected journalists will receive mentoring by experienced editors.

The call is a part of the Balkan Transitional Justice Initiative project, financed by the European Commission.

The project’s aim is to strengthen in-depth reporting on transitional justice in the Balkans, in order to contribute to a more informed citizenry that is engaged in the democratic process.

The journalists will have around three months to dig deeper and research their ideas, and will also have the opportunity to work with experienced editors as mentors to guide them through the process of writing in accordance with BIRN standards.

Programme Elements

The programme includes the following elements:

  • Grant of €1,000 for research expenses
  • Ongoing mentoring and editorial support
  • Publication of articles in English and all local languages

The topic for grantees’ investigative stories is transitional justice. Applicants can explore the relationships between truth, justice, accountability and dealing with the past in the former Yugoslavia. Their story should have an investigative or analytical element. In their proposal, make sure they answer the usual journalistic questions (who? when? where? why? how?) and also ‘so what?’ — why should readers be interested in this story? Explain what makes this story relevant and interesting.

Financial Terms & Conditions

  • Every grantee shall receive a €1,000 grant
  • Research and travel expenses are included in this €1,000
  • BIRN will sign a contract with every grantee. The contract will define all further details

Eligibility Criteria

  • Individuals from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia with journalistic experience are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants should have citizenship of one of the countries covered by the programme.
  • Applicants should be proficient in English, although reports, in exceptional cases, may be written in local languages.
